Are they any good? I was gonna see if i could persuade my wee mammy to get me one, but having never used one, or know any person that has one, i thought i better get some input....

Help? Thoughts? Advice on which to get please.

So is it worth getting the one with 3G?

The Wi-Fi one is ok, but a bit slow and since it ain't got touch screen, a bit harder to navigate. It's good for reading in daylight, no glare, but at night the downside is that it doesn't light up. One of the covers you can get for it comes with a built in light. All in all, it's pretty good.

love mine - kinda resisted at first as i do love proper books and bookshops and these devices will prolly see the death of those soon (borders for example) but on trips its so nice not having a carryon full of books and just my wee handy kindle - wouldnt reccomend the 3g version as at the end of the day u are prolly gonna order your books at home where u have wifi anyway - spend the extra on a case for it or a light if u so inclined

my 2 cents as always - bloo

We both have one and as others have already said adore it, as to wifi or 3G ours are both Wifi only however if you have a smart or Iphone just pait the Kindle to your phone's hotspot and the problem ( if there ever was one ) is solved ....

I have to disagree. I have the 3G version and I love it. Wherever you are in the world if you have a 3g signal then you can use it to browse the web (basic web – no flash or YouTube etc) all for free as Amazon pick up the cost .

I was in France and Spain this year and used it to browse the BBC news pages and even read FAB. I used it to pick up my emails and post on facebook (but FB is a little hit or miss)

The browser is not a widely publicised feature but it is worth the extra money in my opinion.

I also use kindle to subscribe to a newspaper and every morning the day’s paper was downloaded into my kindle via 3G.

Can the colour of the kindles 'pages' be changed or is it that dull grey colour all the time. And what about books with illustrations... do they show that?

Head to Tescos, the bigger stores are flogging them at the same price as Amazon.

They have a couple of demo models out that you can play with....

Same goes for overpriced iPads... nice but style rules over substance.

I've just wasted my money on the new Kindle and it doesn't work. Took it back to the shop and got a replacement but still no joy … it just won't download any books!

How stupid is that? It's the one thing it's supposed to be brilliant at!????

There's already another thread running, either in The Lounge or Swingers Chat.

The cheaper version is wifi only while the dearer one with the keyboard also has 3G. It also has more storage.

There doesn't appear to be anyone doing it discounted, it's also available from Argos.

It has to be iPad all the way, you can download apps that enable it to download books from all the providers making it the best there is for all us bookworms.

Totally agree with all the comments about the iPad. Definitely the one to beat! The Kindle has been a massive headache for me, it just wouldn't download any books. Looked on all the tech forums and many have had the same problem but none of the workarounds work!

So got my money back and bought a Kobo, £60 off at the moment, and it worked straight out of the box. It's beautiful! It's not cluttered with buttons and clunky navigation, and best of all … it's touch! Brilliant!

So next purchase? Definitely an iPad.

i have an i pad2 and also the kindle3g and for reading books i always use the kindle...the e ink is much preferable to the high shine off the i pad2 and its much more like reading an actual book, you can read it in bright daylight and i find the actual layout much preferable to the ipad for reading.

wh smith have brought out a new e reader which is somewhere between a kindle and a ipad2 and has recieved rave reviews

I think that's the Kobo, as mentioned above.
