It’s not what you do it’s the way that you do it ...IT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAY IT’S THE WAY THAT YOU SAY IT

Point for debate (meaning intelligent discussion that provokes food for thought without petty insults)

Apologies to admin if this post is inappropriate but I’m wondering what others consider good debate. I’d see it stating my view, then, others agree or NOT. If they disagree I’d expect a reason for the difference of opinion and an explanation of what they believe and why. I’d think about that, then modify/be swayed or stick with my original thoughts.

What I don’t want to see is passive aggressive ego rubbing folk who say something that is inherently meant to rub folk up the wrong way and really nothing to do with the original topic.

What do you all think? Play nice

Ellesmere Port

Scottish forum threads are all about taking the piss. It could be the most serious topic then 1 comment will change the demographic of the post. Sad but true.

There's rarely a serious topic for debate posted on the Scottish forum.

There's often lots of silly questions asked.

I don't see anything wrong with having a little forum funny time.

It amuses my fanny muchly

Glasgowish

I love a good debate but dislike arguements. Shame some folk cant do one without the other.

Debate that doesn't descend into petty bickering and point scoring is great but a rarity, not only here but in real life

Love a good debate

But some either take a different view personally or take it as an argument

I've seeing a good topic and everyone's different take on it

But as folk have said earlier it very rarely happens on the Scottish forum nowadays.

Too many with grudges or one upmanship.

Weird on an adult site.

Debating is fine between adults who can see things from someone elses perspective as well as their own (when the medium is the spoken word). When it comes to text base debates, everything is interpreted by way of the reader (not communicated as the author intended, regardless of how well emphasized) and often misinterpreted, resulting in a slanging match. imho

Was at a job induction type thing a couple weeks ago and was being told about to think how you communicate. So here you go.

I never told the cook to drink the brandy.

i NEVER told the cook to drink the brandy.

i never TOLD the cook to drink the brandy.

i never told the COOK to drink the brandy.

i never told the cook to DRINK the brandy.

i never told the cook to drink the BRANDY.

So many ways to communicate one sentence totally changing the context of the sentence.

And after reading some profiles on here (yes some people read them), i hesitate to credit EVERYONE with a reasonable level of intelligence.

Really like this as it’s something I’ve said often myself but this illustrates it really well. Lots of great replies too, thank you. I’m of the opinion you should be able to state a point without doing so in an inflammatory way. I love the Scottish dry sense of humour but feel a lot of folk have stopped posting due to arguments breaking out...maybe that can’t be helped

This quote sums it up for me...

"Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience."

If you're at the point where a discussion or debate on here is upsetting you, then you probably need to log off and remind yourself of what is important.

True but then a topic discussed might be deeply personal though not with anyone here and the idea of a forum is to raise awareness of an issue that others might not have realised or know of.
