Should GSoA be rebuilt?

After tragic fire (again) should Glasgow School of Art be rebuilt at a possible cost of between £100m to £200m ?

It was an iconic building, but Its a definite no from me, with possible £200m price tag.

Better ways to spend our money....what do you think ?

There may be no choice some red sandstone buildings are protected.

So you fix them or be left with a ruin.

got a few here that magically burnt down.

Protection order on lanarkshire sandstone means the building has to go back up as it was so no new housing for the owner and to expensive to put back up

I'd rather my tax money didn't get spent on this but given that the government will waste it on something else, at least we will have a nice building to show for it.

Agreed though - surely it was insured?

Also, find out who was responsible for fire prevention/alarm systems not being installed/operational after the last fire and punish them heavily.

if you look around glasgow all the new building work seems to be student flats so that makes me think that the universities have money they want to invest in property, i bet they wont lift a finger to rebuild the machintosh building saying that it is not profitable and beg from the tax payer to fund it . They should all get of their arses and fund it the themselves .the amount of cash they generate from foreign students is tremendous and students come from all over the world to study at the Mac building. so public funding NO uni funding it yes

Of the ~17,500 student rooms available in Glasgow, ~6,500 are owned by Universities.

A further 6,000 are planned by private operators in the coming year.

Just because it says student accommodation on the chicken coop, doesn't mean it's owned by a university.

I suppose if the GSoA brings in a huge economy in regards to tourism alone then yeah but not really clear on the facts but I know it is a big attraction for Glasgow in regards To Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Time to move on. It's an absolute tragedy but 100million + is just far far too much.

Something more modern and easier/cheaper to construct has to be the way forward

GSA has been struggling financially for the last few years. They don’t have enough to finish the refurbishment of the old Stow College let alone the Mackintosh building. They were still short of £millions to finish repairs from the last fire.

Of course you re-build it. It's part of Scotland heritage and something we are guardians of for Scotland future.

Think of it this way...rebuild it for 200 million and when it's still there 100 years from now attracting the world it's 2 million a year very well spent.

The Mack building is surrounded by roads in 3 sides and its only the O2 and the Campus that are behind it. The Reid building is across the road and it’s a monstrosity. Mostly poured concrete and glass.

The interior of the Mack was entirely wooden hence why it is now a shell.

Re buld yes but not with public money what about the philanthropist ie.Farmer ,Soutar and the rest surely they can help Also that sprinkler system should have kicked in and also fire alarms some one should be in BIG BIG trouble for this horrendous fire

They need to make a decision soon. There are so many people that can’t return to their homes because of the exclusion zone. Jobs have been lost as the businesses can’t operate.

I fully understand the architectural importance of the original building but the damage is too severe and any rebuild will be macintosh replica... it’s not the same and not worth the money

Was reading up on the news website said the walls have moved at least 6" now and are at immiment risk of collapse so i highly doubt itll be saved theyll have to pull it down

I’ve removed my shoes a few times walking up and down. I’m sure a few have ruined their shoes!
