"Can't say I get overly sentimental about buildings other than my own home but feel heart sorry for the students who will likely lose course work. Have a son who is trying to get into Duncan of Jordanstone here in Dundee so know all too well how much work these students put in." Not being from Glasgow I Hadn't realised it hadn't yet reopened since the last fire | |||

A student was telling a guy next to me that as it was still being repaired no one was using it, so no coursework has been lost this time. It looked horrific though, think it's a bulldozer job this time than a repair job | |||

"Criminal....an iconic building that's just about to be re-opened after a serious fire 4 years previous is totally engulfed in fire by the time the fire and rescue service attend?....and that's about 3 minutes from the fire station. Really??? I would assume by this stage that its had its new fire alarm system installed and passive fire protection measures would have been put into place during the refurbishment to prevent or restrict any future fire from totally engulfing the building. Obviously not, or there's been a total disregard by contractors in recognising that the chances of history repeating itself. Contractors will be shitting themselves. I noticed scaffolding was all around the building as well, surely they must have had recognised the building is vulnerable at times like that and security staff on-site should be onsite taking cognisance its such an iconic building. Serious questions have to be asked. The SFRS aren't slow in coming down heavy on small business as and when they have a small incident. Just hope the same will be done this time." the new sprinkler system was not live yet it was caused by a gas canister that a student was using for a project, tragic accident | |||

I would assume if so, then only with approval of Historic Scotland, and that in itself is not an easy thing to get passed by them. | |||

"Several points- The students didn’t lose any work as it’s not open yet unlike last time when they lost a lot of their degree show exhibits It’s still under renovation and surrounded by scaffolding and Sauchiehall St is down to one lane. No one was in the building this time to raise the alarm. No alarm systems would have been active as work is still ongoing. The ABC has also been damaged this time. The damage does appear to be more extensive than the last time. I was just up there two weeks ago as well. So sad. " I have no knowledge if an automatic fire detection and alarm system was installed or not, albeit I'd be surprised if there wasn't one already in situ. Ideal time to install a fire detection system is whilst access is readily available. If there was one, the fire Alarm System can be isolated by zone/floor, in effect, put offline during the working day and made 'live' as and when workers leave. People and organisations have to be held accountable for this major failing....primarily those whose wouldn't sanction the costs for on-site security staff. Well known by insurers and Fire Services that buildings are always more vulnerable and susceptible to fire during the construction and refurbishment stage. Fire safety legislation relating to audits and inspections of specific buildings by the Fire Services has to be reviewed as well. | |||

There's still hope it will rise again and the digital scans of every bit of the building could mean it'll look exactly the same. It's a World Heritage class building, or was, and its rebuild is about so much more than a university building.
Knowing the structure and the use of the building, it's an absolute wonder it didn't burn down years ago. Soaked in a hundred years of turps and heated from the furnace through wooden shuttered ducts, it's not exactly ever been the safest place to populate 24 hours a day. | |||
