I came home tonight to find another PCN from Glasgow City council for straying onto a bus lane at night.

After getting caught before I am careful but never saw any signs before turning into West George Street.

I did a bit of research and there was a Freedom of Information request made to the council about the bus lane.

Turns out the GCC issued over 32,500 PCNs for that one street in a 12 month period to February 2018. That is 90 tickets a day!!

I am going to check what signage was in place before paying it but a great little money earner for the council.

Of the 33,000 tickets issued about 26,000 got paid. Even if everyone paid the reduced £30 penalty that is still close to a £1 million pound bonanza for the council so you can imagine how much they are raking in from all the bus lanes.

I think that it is pretty obvious by the number of tickets issued that the signage is kept deliberately poor to maximise tickets and the poor motorist is once again being used as a cash cow.

Anyone with half a brain in the council should realise that the issuing of so many tickets indicates a fault on them but no one is going to do anything about it as long as the money keeps rolling in.

I’ve had a ticket twice, the first time I was wrong, I think... THEY like to make it very confusing. Second time due to complications of roadworks and parked works vehicles... sometimes... you do get the feeling it’s just to raise money

Not being political but this was a HUGE money earner for the previous council administration and the present one doesnt seem to be rectifying it The sineage is TERRIBLE and no wonder drivers get caught out

If you're brave enough, you could photograph the area to indicate the (lack of) adequate and visible signage and keep contending the fine until it is taken to independent adjudicator.

.

I hate driving in city centre for this reason though.

I think a few folks have done this but the trouble is when u are in a car in that area you are in the bus lane before you realise it Last year i was in a pub over looking this bus lane and we counted at least 10 cars going through it the poor souls didnt know till they were in it owing to the terrible sineage

I avoid going into the city centre completely so the shops mss out on me spending there due to either too many signs, or complete lack of signs. You can only pay attention to so many distractions when you should watch the traffic.

It might also explain why so many drivers now stick rigidly to the right hand lane on dual carriageways as they never know when it might become a bus/taxi lane.

GCC will have no interest in making it easy for drivers as long as the money rolls in.

If you cough up the money within 14 days you only have to pay £30 to the thieving council. I believe that if you dare to appeal and lose then you have to pay the full amount. I think that is also completely wrong.

Devils advocate. If its a regular journey you should know where the bus lanes are and if its a one off or once a month shopping trip or whatever then use the bus or train. Thats why the bus lanes are there to make your bus journey quicker. We all know the speed limits on our roads but i bet there are loads of Fabbers with speeding fines under our belts. Perhaps better bus lane signage would help but my guess is not much. You could put a 70mph sign every hundred yards on a motorway but it would not stop anyone that likes or wants to speed .

Walk the route take photos of all the sections of the bus lane. Take it to the local police and ask advice has the council broke the rules on bus lanes if they have ask your union to sue the cancil for their failure to maintain the roads and sign. Also quote the number of tickets issued. If they have to go to court they will loose.

Tbh all the bus lanes in city are quite well marked both with signage and road markings think a lot of people caught don't realise there are cameras on all bus lanes

I got caught in the same one after an audi (ain't it always?) cut across two lanes to make the same turn and the only way I could avoid hitting him was to cut into the bus lane. Talk about adding insult to injury.
