First time poster - be gentle

Over the last year since moving to a full time desk job I've developed lower back pain, mostly to my right hand side. I know I'm 100% to blame for it by slouching forward with bad posture but can anyone in the Dumbarton/Clydebank/Glasgow area recommend a good place for a firm massage? Or is a chiropractor really worth the extra dosh?

Any help/recommendations would be much appreciated - and happy Fab Friday folks

Try the gym mate and some good stretching exercise before you blow your cash.

Eating grapes is good for back pain....and sit ups and walking helps strengthen the muscles if you're not one for the gym.

I suffer from back problems due to work, go onto Google and search "Lower back pain exercises nhs" I would link it but I don't think I'm alowed to post it. The exercises there I was told to do by a physiotherapist, good luck man

Just as a wee help, do you carry a wallet in your back pocket? Don't have anything in your back pockets when sitting for any length of time. I got this tip about 15 yrs ago and now if I sit down with my wallet in my pocket, it feels like I've sat on a brick. It DOES make that much difference. Also, don't spend any more than 30 mins at your desk. Get up, stretch, and go for a stroll round the office. I've suffered severe back issues for over 25 years, including having 2 spine ops, and these kind of tips now save me a lot of discomfort. Don't ignore it, as it will get worse. BTW, pillates helps build your 'core' and from there you can build on fitness. Don't go straight to gym etc as without knowledge of what is causing your pain you could do yourself damage

Self refer to physio at Clydebank or Drumchapel health centres. Lower back and leg pain suggests a disc is pressing on a nerve. If that is the case, massage might feel nice, but it won't help.

If you think your bad posture is the cause review your work station.

Is your screen too far from your seat? Forcing you to lean forward.

Are you seating on your 'kidneys'?

Do you have a curved lower back?

In which case very small travel pillow in the curve will be more comfortable for you

Is your mouse position correctly?

Forcing you to stretch/position the shoulders area awkwardly?

Then, you can assess what you do with your legs/feet. Positioning, crossing at the ankle, etc... there are foot rest you can get to help.

Pain in lower back, massage with arnica cream, gentle rotation of the waist, stretching of the shoulders above the head, rotation of the shoulders, gentle movements of the neck.

Your work should have a DSE assessor who can help. Usually it can be a very simple thing like a change in height of your chair, desk or even risers to lift computer monitors. I’ve done all that but have had to get a sit / stand desk as although I have all the gear my back is still suffering. Standing whilst I work is helping greatly.

In fact I think sit/ stand desks should be a legal minimum requirement as they are in some of the Nordic countries.

Could be sciatica.

It sounds similar to the pain I had a while back. Mine was put more down to arthritis but my doctor said he felt sciatica could be responsible for pain going across the right hand side and it is a condition that tends to be mainly across one side and I think the right is more common.

PLEASE do not just get someone to give you a "massage", can do so much harm than good. Go see your GP and get a referral for physio or chiropracter. (Trust me, I know, I have MS and can't have anyone touch me if they are not qualified) xx
