"I agree with the minimum pricing But I think it won't do much for the problem. They put cigarettes up every year and still people pay the price?" This is the downside the ones already addicted who will pay the price so what are they neglecting to feed the habit ? Food, bills, children ?

"Thirty years ago thousands of Scots were taking to the streets and being civilly disobedient to protest the introduction of a tax in Scotland that didn't exist everywhere else in the UK, to the chant of Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, out, out, out. Today those self-same people embrace a Scotland that not only has additional taxation to the rest of the UK, but also has the highest personal taxation in the UK. I hear no chanting, only the heavy silence of irony. But then, nationalists don't do irony, do they. " Scotland didn't have its own Parliament, with separate tax raising powers. The poll tax was imposed on Scotland by a Westminster government that only a minority of Scots voted for. This measure was brought in by a Scottish government, elected by Scots, on the basis of the published manifestos of the parties. As I said previously, this was in the SNP manifesto, so it was not a stealth tax, sneaked in under the radar, nor imposed without the knowledge of the electorate. It has been rigourously scrutinized by parliament, and though the courts, and found to be perfectly legal in the form that has come in to force. Trying to equate it to the poll tax is a rather simplistic argument.

"The Westminster government was voted in by the UK electorate and as part of the UK that includes Scotland Although if your an SNP supporter you seam to suit yourself in what a democracy is. The last I heard Scotland voted to remain part of the UK but as usuall the SNP won't accept a democratic vote and are still trying to push through indy ref 2 Dare I say 4,5 and 6 Untill they get there own way. " So you are saying we either don't have, or shouldn't have, a Scottish Parliament? Either way, that isn't facing up to reality. We do have a Scottish parliament, elected by the Scottish people, to enact laws on behalf of those same Scottish people. If you don't like it, you'll have to time travel back to the 1990's, I'm afraid.

"Wee nippy at her best.. twat of a woman" If you're going to be pedantic, it would be wrong of me not to point out you're wrong; this was introduced before Nicola was FM, it was Alex Salmond at the time. It's also been applauded by the BMA, a raft of alcohol charities & health professionals and basically everyone that's not a Jakie, or involved in the supply of drink. The Scottish Whisky Association didn't spend half a million quid and 4 years fighting this because they deeply care about your health, wellbeing and wallet. They did it cos they peddle a dangerous drug and don't care about the 60+ Scots who die from it each week. If this saves even one of them from dying (and EXPERTS, which you notably are not, say it will), it will be worth it that you have to pay an extra 30p a can for your special brew.

"All I’m going to say is watch the thieving of alcohol even more now ! Went to local shop for 4 beers £1.90 for a tin of tennants (pish water ) £5 for a bottle of 2litre cider (2bomb) for the younger ones amongst us ! Do I honestly think this will deter underage drinking , binge drinking etc , definitely not ! As I said they will steal ! " I'd sooner drink quality than quantity.

"Totally agree my mother was a career alcoholic who downed half bottles in one go in the toilet just as a starter. We got inches away from eviction. I answered the door to a cunt in a trenchcoat slamming a letter into my chest that said at the bottom “under the pain of ejection”. I might have been a child but words I will never forget. Her habit was far more important than ger family. Alcohol whether anyone likes to admit destroys families and people. As ‘collateral damage’, she decribed me to my Dad as “he disny matter”. This, sadly is how alcohol lowers people. I talked to one of the MP’s that brought this in and he said it was designed to minimise the purchase of alcohol. As someone said earlier if it saves one life then it’s worth it. If it stops families being destroyed then even better." see this is the problem horrible story one which shouldnt happen but does. what exactly will this pricing structure change if anything it will only make things worse a die hard alkie will not give up because its more expensive they will just find ways and means to get that btl/can. I honestly see this as creating a bigger problem

"I agree with the minimum pricing But I think it won't do much for the problem. They put cigarettes up every year and still people pay the price?" If you dont think it will do much for the problem then why agree with the policy? Someone said its about changing our drinking culture which is true but i dont think the culture is to drink because its cheap Someone else said only gut rot will go up in price and that is beyond naive... it will push the price of everything up because either 1. It wasn't quite "strong cheap shite" but is still in the band to be captured by this or 2. Companies price point their brand to help differentiate so if the "cheap stuff" under them went up so will they or 3. Bottles of spirits will also now be more expensive at wholesale prices for pubs/ clubs so while they were selling to you at already higher than 50p a unit, their profit margin will now be squeezed and they will want to recoup that

"Nothing more than an extra tax laid down by the sheep in wolves clothing that is that wee cow. " A tax is where a government raises money for public finances through a levy on something. As has been pointed out a number of times on this thread, the money does not go to the government. It goes to the retailer. It irritates me that politics are so partisan in this country, that even an attempt to improve the health of the population is used to score points, just because certain parties aren't in power, and did nothing to address the alcohol culture in Scotland in all the time they had a chance to. No law is perfect, just as no political party is perfect, but to advocate doing nothing, instead of trying to make lives better is not the answer for Scotland, and to complain about politicians because they increase the price of gutrot, because it is against your selfish interests says more about complainers than it does about the government.

" I get that you have your point of view but there's something called vat that's applied to purchases which does go to the public purse, hence the roundabout use of the word "tax" thing is these new rules which are designed to encourage help to certain areas of society i.e the under privileged power drinker may I fact lead to far greater problems when they stop putting food on the table or clothes on their kids backs. I don't have the solution I'm just saying I don't agree with this attempt

If I went into a chemist in Scotland with £8.80 for a script I’d walk with with £8.80 still in my pocket and be able to buy 4 cans of special brew. That’s the point I’m making. The Scot gov prioritises what it does with the cheque given from London on devolved issues.
