I’ve been in agony since Friday, can hardly move let alone walk. Not sure how this happened. Any advice from fellow sufferers, should I contact doctor?

I’ve been applying a heat pad most of the weekend, currently reeking of deep heat but still in agony

Is it muscular pain, or skeletal? Do you exercise? When you do, do you properly warm up and and cool down?

.

When I went to see my GP about lower back pain, he took out his prescription pad, wrote, “Treat Your Own Back by Robin McKenzie” on it, handed it to me, and told me to get myself on Amazon when I got home.

.

(He did also give me some diclofenac.)

Get yourself to docs write down all your symptoms in case you forget to mention something . He’ll examine you then possibly refer you to physiotherapist prescription for appropriate pain meds . You only have one body take care of it .

If you've been treating yourself for a few days and there's no improvement then go to your doctor.

Is the pain confined to your back or is it in your legs too? My sciatica started with pins and needles in my leg then pain through the lower back and leg until I couldn't stand. Physio and amitryptaline help.

Physio is mostly self referral these days, the receptionist in your surgery will give you the phone number.

I’ve had sciatica, physio and a few sports massages sorted it.

Gp can prescribe drugs to make it bearable until the pain subsides.

With very little info, best I can say is go to your doctor to determine if it is muscular or skeletal.

Try thinking about how it was triggered. And a repetitive activity you do daily.

Many lower back problems comes from tension in leg muscles or hips.

Get well soon OP

Take painkillers, if able and see your gp. The painkillers stop you from tensing your muscles which could make the pain worse.

Physio and or chiropractic assistance may help.

Good luck x

Doc's for painkillers (use them wisely), physio for excercise - I am currently dealing with this sort of issue.

Doc says possible trapped nerve, physio lower back stiffness, leading to symptoms of a trapped nerve.

Been doing what physio told me - movement specific Excercise and stretching along with steam room/ hot tub and gentle swimming - front crawl.

Slowly getting better. Well, I don't feel like I'm being stabbed in the groin as often now.

Diclofenac was fantastic stuff!! They don't give it anymore unfortunately.

I now get something called naproxen. Sleepless night being nauseous as hell, but back pain gone quickly. Don't leave it OP, go see your doc x

Until you get seen by a professional it’s utterly pointless getting advice off of fab. There’s so many different things it could be. Ive had lower back pain problems for years, I tried doctors for pain relief, chiropractors, physios, acupuncturists and I finally found a guy from motherwell that sorts it who is an osteopath. Miracle hands

I have suffered with back, neck and shoulder pain for years and I just take Ibuprofen and try to relax as often as I can. I have days when I'm crippled with the back pain but I just put up with it. Unfortunately it runs in my family so there's not a great deal I can do about it x

This. Get the pain managed (as much as possible) before you go down the physio, massage or osteopath route. then the 2 work very well together.

Buy an Inversion table! Only way to guarantee no stress on the spine. Let's your back stretch out. Couple of minutes and the relief will be amazing!

Morphine and all opiates lead to opioid & opiate induced osteoporosis and fractures.

.

a thing very few doctors inform you of.

whether it be MST, Oramorph, oxy, co-Codamol, Dihydrocodeine or other pain relief.

Diazepam. ....hmm.

One minute heat four minutes of ice 3x daily. Tennis ball into sore knots on your back- maybe up against a wall

Pillow between your knees when sleeping, be careful how you get out of bed in the morning, move around as much as you can without being stupid. As soon as you can, get to an osteopath and/or acupuncturist.

Assess risk from other problems- mattress, posture, knee pain, gait, shoes, work, lifting, consider Pilates once you are better.

Not everyone responds to acupuncture but it's very effective for lower back pain if you are a responder.

Yoga helped me alot with back pain. Yoga for regular guys or DDP yoga, easily found on all good pirate sites. Don't need to go mental with it, but over time the stretches really help.

Best thing for lower back pain as it's often chronic. Keep up the core strength and flexibiliy.

I thought decent doctors didn't give diazepam anymore for back pain. It's pretty well discredited as a therapeutic treatment for LBP

Not read any of the replies as just want to say get seen to right away if you have the following so forgive me if the route cause has been diagnosed or not

If you feel a slight pulsing type feeling and your pish is darker than usual then it’s most probably a kidney problem

If so get to A&E immediately. From experience you could have kidney stones and it’s gotten stuck in one of your passageways before it reaches your bladder and waste from your kidneys is being back up without anywhere to go.

Hull

I suffered injuries in early December after falling flat on my back on an icy pavement.

A&E confirmed nothing broken, just pulled lower back muscles. A Physio course followed but failed so had MRI scan which showed compression of a lower vertebrae trapping nerves.

People have suggested NAPROXEN on other posts but GP's won't issue for more than 2 months due to possible addiction problems. I work with "Sukkarto" Slow Release CoCodamol tabs on conjuction with Ibuprofen plus alternating Heat patches & Voltarol.

It doesn't work totally but helps; I've changed physical aspects of work to ease stress on back.

Don't whatever you do, stretch yourself incl the back when waking up as I have "locked" my back on 3 occasions with excruciating pain as a result. It takes Paramedics to get you on your feet!

My GP has me seeing Spinal specialist next Monday.

OP. Good luck and hope it isn't too serious.

Go to NHSinform and look for the MSK helpline. They can give simple exercise tips or get you into physio.

Investigate if PEA would help. Targeted exercises are really important to keep the pain at bay for as long as possible. Acupuncture can help up to 80% of cases and has better outcomes than opioid use.

Naproxen isn't addictive but there can be serious side effects if taken longterm
