How many can tell the difference in the "New Irn Bru"

Ok we are now a few months in from Barrs changing the recipe on Irn Bru

How many can honestly taste the difference ?

My wife brought in cans from Asda not long after the change and i took one sip of it and could tell the difference to me it was a watered down after taste not nice!!!

£1.4 million spent to save money on the sugar tax

I will take a punt that Barrs didnt think of people with type 1 diabetes that need sugar

In all honesty it doesn't bother me too much, I noticed at the beginning, but it didn't stop me drinking it and now it just tastes like irn bru

It definitely isn't as bad as diet, that really is nasty.

Do you like extra or diet bru? I always thought full fat bru was too syrupy , might need to grab a cab to try now

Mr here,

I'm type 1 diabetic. Not really sure what Ur point is exactly. Why should Barr's worry about type 1 diabetics? If u need sugar use dextrose tablets or increase carb intake or decrease insulin dose. Ur health is not Barr's responsibility it's urs.

I think it's shit anyway, but lot's love it, seems a shame to tamper with a classic though

Yeah I get why they changed it but would it not have been better adding to their range rather than replacing altogether

Indeedy - from what I'm gathering on here though, they've done it to avoid the sugar tax?

Full sugar will become more expensive but their leaving the choice for the consumer i believe the bottle size will reduce so the price per bottle for all their range stays the same .

They just don't want to be doing the paperwork for it , it's the end customer that pays at the checkout .

If any Barrs employee brought this up at any stage in the change, they'd have been laughed out the room.

It's shit. Not as shit as pure diet as there's some sugar in there, but it's so obviously not the same that I have no idea who Barr's taste-tested it on when they claimed that almost nobody could tell the difference.

Net result - we've stopped buying it outright. Coke's about the only soft drink I'll still buy and it's getting stupidly expensive.

Re the diabetes thing - that was Lucozade. They reduced the sugar content and didn't tell anyone. I know several diabetics who use Lucozade when they need a quick sugar fix... and all of a sudden it wasn't working.

I've also ditched Subway for meals as they no longer have *any* full fat soft drinks in the dispensers so I can't claim the lunch deal.

Yay nanny state. Forcing people from perfectly natural sugar to created-in-a-lab sweeteners.

I know of 2 places where you can still buy the old recipe stuff. 1 in Edinburgh and the other in Dundee. The Dundee one is a German doner kebab restaurant and when I asked how they were still carrying it she said it's because they get their bru imported from Germany

The present one always tastes better than the ones before.

Verily I tell thee... when you think back oftentimes does one almost barf! When one remembers the last one, the present one tastes so much better...

And keep a can of Irn Bru by your side in case it doesn't.

"They've just reported a profits increase for the past period perhaps the next one will show how the new recipe is truely being recieved . "

Thats cause of all the panic buying and stocking up on old recipe pushing up the sales

The new stuff has a weird after taste ... i only drink it occasionally and could still tell a mile away but maybe because i dont usually drink diet stuff with sweetners

I do think if you have it in a glass with ive that once the ice starts to melt the difference is less noticeable though

No thanks I’d rather have fun. But that doesn’t mean comparing the taste of irn bru.

However each to their own if this stimulates your brains don’t let me stop you

Willing to bet very few can really taste the difference but most folk think they can. I spent months giving a guy I dated diet drinks because that's all I drink. Every time we were eating out and I ordered a diet drink he'd bitch and moan about how shite it tastes, chemicals, he would never drink that blah blah blah.

Well if it really tastes so bad how did he not notice that's all I'd been giving him? I do this to people all the time and they NEVER notice it's diet. I even gave someone an old can of full sugar irn bru, said it was a new one and they're all 'oh you can taste it, it's not the same!' It's all in your head

It wasnt in my head because twice now i have ordered irn bru out with lunch ... forgot about the new version and only remembered when it tasted funny and i looked at the can thinking id been given diet by mistake

Like i said before once there is ice in it the difference is less noticeable though so maybe thats why your ex never noticed

I d*unk full fat nectar for years loved it ,decided to try extra as diet stuff left a coating in my mouth the extra is what I now buy and only thing that got me hooked was I began to drop stones in weight as a result of no sugar but I think they should have three nectars to suit everyone's taste buds as we aint all the same
