I have only ever been fined for speeding never banned. Has the law changed?

"I have only ever been fined for speeding never banned. Has the law changed?"

There are many different reasons for getting a driving ban. No point going into it on here.

Was a professional driver for long time and been to court a few times, none regarding me, just a witness but you learn and understand a lot.

Either an accumulation of points (up to 12) for various reasons or doing double speed limit for the road your on will both result in bans not a new law ..it's always been that way

Nothing new. We all know the law regarding driving at excessive speed, using a mobile, drinking, etc.

Just have to take it on the chin and learn from it. Some forces offer a speed awareness course which can chop a quarter off the ban.

Don't be tempted to drive during your ban as it is straight to jail if you get caught and your car is seized and you get charged with even more offences which makes the ban even longer.

No sympathy if im honest..speeding kills lifes and to get a ban means you were either way over the limit or a repeat offender.

I'm sure someone will correct me but isn't having simple things like a headlamp out not 3 points on your license nowadays??? Not justifying anything but just saying an accumulation of small things could lead to a ban

A headlamp out cannot result in 3 points.

It could happen to you at anytime as you turn the corner and it pops ad the police are there. they will give you what is called a Horty and you are given 24 hours to fix it and produce it or documents to say so

Look on the bright side;

the ban will give you time to look for a new insurer and save up for the hefty increase if cost

Surely if you were, by your own admission, heavy footed but claim you weren't "way over the limit" it'd only be points and/or a fine? Unless you are a repeat offender or were really stupid and has no insurance or something? I'm nosey, I admit.

dangerous driving isnt just speed its no care given to the rules of using the road you were banned id guess rightly so. its just a pity more are not caught.

Absolutely, but if it were a minor infraction, speeding or otherwise, you'd need a series of them to end up with a ban.

"Absolutely, but if it were a minor infraction, speeding or otherwise, you'd need a series of them to end up with a ban."

Yep; unless you're a new driver (only got my licence a year ago, so have to be ultra careful), when 6 points will see you banned, you have 12 points to "spend" before a ban.

Speeding will only get you 3, unless you're going VERY over the limit.

Dangerous driving etc. will get you a ban tho.

So unless he'd care to come and correct us for our rank speculation, I'm guessing either repeat offender, or driving without due care & attention (which with a modifier of speeding will almost certainly get you 9 points or a full ban).

Of course, he can just come out and say what he did, since he started the thread in the first place.

I have some sympathy if he is remorseful, didn't harm anyone, and made a momentary lapse of judgement. We are guilty of that from time to time; if you're unlucky and the police see you...

On the phone gets you 6 points as does no insurance. Baldie tyres are 3 points each so potentialy 12 points if all 4 look like Kojak's head.

Double the speed limit i.e. 60 in a 30 will get you a dangerous driving charge. Red light jumpers get 3 points.

There are so many things that can get you points that you just have to be careful.

Even eating a sarnie at the wheel these days is deemed as careless driving.

Not correct Horsey

You are now automatically CHARGED now. No idea what the charge was i got i was to busy telling them what a load of bollocks it was. You THEN produce the documents you speak of to the local police station with an mot or garage stamp saying bulb is fixed and they DROP the charges. It is a feckin joke. Works van too so they knew it would be fixed at no cost to me but thats the new rules NOW

Youngster I know got six within first year, licence revoked. Say tests and pass all within 4 weeks. Insurance was due for renewal and worked out cheaper than his first years insurance. Strange but true
