Racism is a word that is thrown regularly in conversations and debates.

We all know the definition of the word.

Now am wondering who knows how it feels!

Racism... have you ever been a victim of it?

Or to open up the debate have you ever been the victim of discrimination?

Only amongst a very vile Englishman once but I think it was more his upbringing than him being racist?

Racism is alive and kicking across all spectrums of society kind of goed along with sexism which I see happening more and more towards men (last part is my opinion and not an attempt to change the focus of this thread)

Working offshore Scots get a hell of a lot of racism directed at them,

called jocks, sweaty socks, etc

constantly told how much we are lower class

constantly told how the English bred their blood into us many years back

no matter what colour skin you are, or what nationality, racism still exists today

Ah but this is only because women have found their voice, traditionally a woman would not have been allowed to speak out against a man.

Men and women are all on an equal playing field now!

I deal with discrimination every day at work. Not so much now and it is getting better, but men and woman are still not on an even playing field when it comes to the workplace.

Perhaps it’s my field of work but then again it doesn’t really matter what field your in, it shouldn’t happen.

I have lived in various diverse parts of the UK over the years and worked temporarily in many more and as a result, I suppose I have received my fair share of "geographically" related abuse. By far the worst, though (and I really do mean by FAR), was a number of years ago when I moved away from my native Lanarkshire for the first time to live in Edinburgh. The number of times I was called a Weegie (often with a far more explicit adjective in front of it!) on a daily basis was unbelievable and not something I could ever have anticipated. Usually it was light-hearted banter but by no means always. Trying to explain that not only was I not a Glaswegian, I had never lived in the city at any time, was pointless.

Couple of months back, I was attacked in the lift by a black guy, got all sort of verbal abuse based on my look and nationality.

Also I work mostly with guys, so I get a woman "jokes".

Although most people are friendly in Glasgow, I was verbaly abused on the street few times.

As a foreigner living here, i have been verbally attacked a few times, especially after the Brexit vote.

Could be some snide remarks, some country stereotyping or (in one case) a "go back to your own country" comment.

Usually i just ignore it and i keep reminding myself of the vast majority of the people that are polite, helpful, open minded and have made me feel welcome, and how they are not the same as a few bigoted idiots.

Never been verbally abused in Glasgow but again maybe it went above my head with the different accent from Edinburgh

As a white male x N Ireland (who used to have ginger hair!) it tends to be the “which football team” question (w my standard answer - “i’m A rugby fan”).. recognising need for constant struggle against all forms of discrimination.

Then seeing Scottish Gov money wasted on building effectively 2 primary schools (when 1 would do) simply to cope w different religions!!. so any wonder i’m an agnostic!! So I end up more interested in trying to understand the history - from the famine & migration to the more recent troubles...

But it was seeing the institutional racism after the St. Paul’s riots in Bristol - and seeing direct affect on my black friends .. = why it’s important as a white male to support campaigns against all forms of discrimination - whether race, disability or gender equality or religious, etc

But also need to recognise “class bias”... why we need a cap on top wage ratio’s and to tackle tax evasion...

Scotland is one of the most racist/bigoted countries in the world. Don't believe the likes of Sturgeon and other MPs tell you otherwise. The sectarianism and anti English elements in particular are disgusting

It's rife in this country and has a very long way to go till it's eradicated

I have had a kind of "ism" applied to me yes... it's worrying that human nature has this negative side to it. I think it probably relates back to very basic tribal behaviour and survival. In this day and age we should be doing better and reminds me of the Einstein quote...

There are only two things that are infinite, the universe and human stupidity ... and I'm not sure about the universe

I have been living in Scotland for 25 years and I think this is the less racist country I have been in at least for a French, Black and Woman like me!

The only time I felt not at home in Scotland was during the Brexit campaign!

Otherwise I have always felt welcome here.
