It's that time of year again where all the wee idiots of the day buy fireworks and let them off over a few weeks.

If like me you have a dog who is terrified of them, do you agree they should be allowed at organised events only?

Would be better for the animals but also save the nhs & fire brigade so much hassle

1 of my dogs refuses to go out after dark after he hears his 1st 1 which was last week

Hate them!!

I wish it would be law they can't be on sale until the week of fireworks night then they go off sale again

My older dog doesnt get too upset if she is safe in house ..got a 5 month pup too tho so dont know how she is going to react ...fireworks should be banned from public sale

My dog loves them but I still think they should be banned altogether

my last dog was a fucking disaster... had to get one of those plug in things and doggie valium.

new dog doesnt give two fucks. but i do. the little bastards firing off bangers and rockets drives me mental

My last dog was terrified but only cos some wee shit through a banger at her when she was tied up outside a shop ... I hate them

I've invested in a thunder shirt which is coming tomorrow so hopefully that helps. Actual bonfire night I have to get sedatives off the vet for him it's a bloody sin

The Thundershirt does make a difference, but if the noise still sets them off, then the Thundershirt won't be much help, sorry to say.

Get your dog used to it as soon as possible, and make sure it knows that wearing it is a good thing, with rewards, playing with it and so on.

My last 2 dogs hated fireworks, I used to put them both in the car on the 5th and take them out for a big long drive during the time most were being let off 6 - 8pm, its always a difficult time for any pet owner.

My two present dogs do not mind fireworks one bit, when I got them at 8 weeks old, the breeder have me a self made up cd full of different noises, cars, trains, lorries, horns tooting as well as fireworks, she told me to play it as often as I could when they were in kitchen

It worked, they have no concerns at all with loud fireworks or other loud noises

.

could be a good tip for others.

I've (Stevie) had them thrown at me and nearly been killed/mutilated, by them. Thrown at me while leaving a corner shop after buying cigarettes, managed to hide in the doorway and only got burn marks on my trainers. Don't ban them, just regulate and license the sale of them.

Trainers were lovely, addidas munchens, still that's what I get for smoking, off them now, cigarettes I mean, still hooked to nice gutties

I remember being excited as a kid come the 5th November,now it just seems to be every other week for another celebration.

Only adverts about safety are in November.

Let it be at organised events that way lass people will be hurt, happier dogs and more exciting for the kids.

Well that's just my opinion anyway

I hate them.

Yes kids and people like fireworks, but I'd rather see them kept to organised events.

Iv'e got a dog that's terrified of them, starts to shake then hyperventilate and it's got so bad before that hes passed out.

Tried all sorts of remedies, sprays, diffusers, safe spaces, firework noises on cd's to try and get him used to it but none of it works.

when everyone starts setting them off theirs not a lot I can do but comfort him and hope he doesn't starve himself of oxygen, the vets suggested sedation but I cant do that for 2 weeks round bonfire night =/

Don't get me wrong, the Thundershirt did make a difference.

Leading up to the 5th November, my dog would only flinch or look at us when fireworks went off. I think he was looking for our reaction to them before he reacted.

However the 5th November was horrendous (apparently, I was at the Dundee Social). He went nuts, ripped up the carpet behind the setee, he ripped a fitted sheet on the bed, broke several of his claws from clawing at various things to try and hide, and also scratched and tried to bit my girlfriend while she was trying to comfort him.

He was a nervous wreck for days afterwards, and the ar$eh0les continued to let fireworks off for another week, and he wouldn't let us put the Thundershirt back on him. I think by then he had associated the Thundershirt with fireworks.

I washed our one last night, and provided it's dry tonight, he'll be getting it back on.

On the original subject however, I don't think fireworks should be banned.

I think they should be regulated more however. The sale and purchase of them should be controlled more.

I know there's no way to stop people from stockpiling them to let of whenever they want, but shops should only be allowed to sell them on specific dates, and you should only be allowed to buy them if you meet certain requirements.

The idiots that let them off for weeks before and after events like the 5th November, and the ones that would likely complain the loudest if something went wrong with a firework and it involved them.

It didn't work for him. He's on a medicine called Sileo which is keeping him from shaking & panting but he's just hiding in the cupboard under a blanket it's a bloody sin

The strange thing with my dog is that he totally acts up with my girlfriend, but is totally relaxed and reserved with me.

Which supports an old argument of mine, that he is looking for sympathy from her.

So tonight he's been lying in his cage or on the sofa quite happily, but once my girlfriend walks into the room he goes to the nearest corner and starts digging.

He was even out at one point when a loud firework went off, and he flinched at the bang, but had been looking at the flash, but he then went back to sniffing.
