Angus & Findhorn

best to decide what style you want and then choose artist who specialises in that.

Some are good at portraiture, some not but better at other types... tribal, contemporary, individual design or trace and colour...

Lot depends if they went to art school/natural artists in my opinion as they can get the depth and shading spot on.

Thanks View...yes I totally agree with all that you have said...in particular about the shading and depth...I have seen the work of really great artists and it makes the tattoo come alive ..its amazing to see work like that. Thats the kind of artist I want to do mine Thanks again Dee xxxxxx

Glasgow

It would mean travelling further but a guy in Carlisle, Mike Haslam, has a tattoo and piercing studio in the city.

He is one of the UK's top artists.

Apparemtly won top awards

Research shops in a 'how ever big' area you are willing to travel...pick an artist according to what you want and what they specialise in-be it custom work portraits, old school, black and grey etc...then make an appointment for a consultation to speak with the artist...or drop in and pay them a visit off the cuff...Custom ink in Argyle street down the finnieston area are always friendly and helpful

Nr Dumfries

I go to Tribe in Edinburgh - they were brilliant with my first tat. They were recommended by a friend who's tats I admired but they told me what I wanted would be better done by one of their other artists. I checked out his work and they were right! I've been back again and will go for a third time soon.

Very very good advice.

Only other thing I'd add is avoid anyone who only does flash like the plague.

Choose your artist wisely.

Glasgow

My sister uses Vendetta in Dunfermline but mine are done by Custom inc in Glasgow. tribe and Oldtown tattoo in Edinburgh are both excellent as far as i know and there's just as many to avoid than to recommend in Glasgow!

As someone else said before once you know what sort of design your after then find out what artist to go to
