When abroad...

Edinburgh

What type of tourist are you?

Are you:

- when in Rome do like the Romans?

- am British, speak English, eat the same?

- embrace the culture,

- etc

Personally, I love going abroad, try to taste the local cuisine and use the language.

It's frustrating when you try and they start in English or to speak back at ya very fast like you know what they are saying lol

But very fun trying the country's language.

So fabbers when abroad, what type of tourist are you?

Do you like going abroad?

personally i love it, speak a wee bit of spanish, enough to get by.

love going to holland, worked there for ages so speak dutch fluently (although most dutch in north holland speak english anyway)

when i worked there one of my colleagues was from south holland and apparently for a dutch native she had a really weird accent, so when we were out in amsterdam or wherever i had to translate for her 'cos i sounded more dutch' and they could understand me !!

I try my best to use the local language. Most places I've been to seem to appreciate when you attempt to use it and will correct you and give you the right way to say and ask for things. Occasionally even ends up in a free drink or two for taking an interest in the language and customs

I love going abroad. Like to go away at least 3 holidays a year for my sanity

Love trying the local cuisine and going on day trips and excursions. I like to cram in as much as I can when away. If further a field and you have the opportunity to see how people live in say a village I love that. Done that on a floating island in Thailand and was an amazing experience. Need to book my next holiday now

I always try and use what language I know. Typically and frustratingly it gets thrown back at you in English.

Though I did turn the tables in south queensferry a few months back when a french car load asked me directions in English and I answered in french. They were quite tickled I think.

There is always the traditional British way.

Speak slowly, very loud, with lots of hand gestures, all whilst wearing unìon jack shorts and/t shirt. This has never been known to fail.

Yes, I like finding the wee artisan shops in the middle of nowhere or tiny alleys.

I was in Portugal last week and we did a Jeep tour but only because I knew the guy was going take us to non touristic areas. I'd rather give my money to local artists.

They have Chinese and Indian takeaways in Scandanavia you know. And they speak better English than in Britain.

I go to Kiev in Ukraine where the predominant language is Russian . . now you really have to witness my attempts at Russian. . . it's diabolical. . . I'm at the speaking stage of maybe a 3 year old.

But the fun you can have trying . . . Locals seem to give some respect when you at least try.

village life, closest main town inverness

"It's frustrating when you try and they start in English or to speak back at ya very fast like you know what they are saying lol"

Yes, and you're stood there like a goldfish trying to work out what they said

.

Personally I know I'm a bit tiring when we go somewhere,

I just want to see and do everything and not a minute can be wasted lol

Kiki and our kids most dreaded word while they grew up was probably "museum",

even the dog puts his ears down and covers his eyes with his paws when he hears it

I holiday abroad a lot, Max and always try the language and certainly the food. Otherwise, it's just Edinburgh in the sun. Though I'm beginning to forget what that's like. Lol

Oui! J'aime voyager

I try local foods And try to speak basics of their language. But slightly annoying when they talk fast back at me.

I like city escapes though generally.
