Hard Drive Help

Can anyone recommend a service I could use to recover images from a knackered external hard drive? Some of them are images with lady friends, so I'm not sure I want to entrust PC World with them!

Google is your friend here, I had the same problem a couple of years ago. The best programmes will let you try for free (ie. Recover only 10 images) so you know it's going to work before you buy.

I can't not remember now which one I went with, but it was pretty good.

Ask the ladies for another meet take more pics then don't forget to keep a back up ya daft bugger .

It's beyond software, I'm afraid, as I've tried that. I need somewhere that can do the hardware as well as software.

This WAS my back up! I had put everything on the HDD to perform an upgrade, and one of the minions knocked the drive off my desk.

I hadn't considered reshoots...mmm!

do you have other ext drives of same spec?.

If so remove the drives trade out cases it maybe the points thats broke and not the actual hdd (usually one screw on back of case then snaplocks round the sides

You can never have enough back ups . Once someone loses something very important they never forget to duplicate or triplicate so as never to lose anything again .

I would buy a caddy remove drive from case and check it that way any place that would do recovery would probably see what they were recovering so I would bin that idea lol

First thing id reccomend is see if your computer can identify it in bios. Also an option is take it appart and plug it in via sata. Bios will tell u if its buggered or not.

This is the sorta stuff I do as a job, and I say the best/cheapest option to go with initially is the caddy option.

Ask around a friend may have one that you can borrow.

In terms of discretion, just tell them you've found some old HDD's and want to check what's on them before disposing of.

Just take it to a computer shop in a city away from you . They wont care what pics are on them. I done a handyman job in an old couples shed. Found lots of sensitive stuff hidden away. Water off a ducks back really , its a paid job. They wont even be interested in pics as long as they get paid.

And what could they do with the copy if it happened. Would a shop or business really risk thier livlihood to reveal pictures from another person computer. No chance.

If you believe nobody is interested in what's there that's very naive I'd say . I speak from personal experience . Anything suspected of an adult nature is reported to protect the company from any comebacks .

I think Its very rare a HDD failed as a result off a fall! Its more like a casefailure where a cable socket or similar has been damaged

I think best option is to open the casing and replace it with a new!

No i never said they would not be interested in contents of hard drive . I said they would not be interested in this guys dirty or sensitive pictures. All in a days work for a computer repair shop. Unless you are implying that the OP has kids porn or some other unlawful material on there. Or are you speaking from your own hobby of copying images from computers you work on ?. Where do you work. Again try googling storys of repair shops circulating personal info from customers computers. Not very many.

Try the caddy idea first cos its the cheapest and easiest option. If that didn't work you need to buy or find the same model of drive and swap the main circuit boards over, easier than it sounds. Most hardware failures are on the main circuit board.
