"Thought you couldn't get asked again for a period of time "

Me too Falcon but honestly, sick of it - it's maybe about 18 months since the last one but I've had it about ten times over the last ten years... it's an utter pain... They should ask for volunteers to do it, I'm sure they would get loads!

You keep getting asked back because you turn up, the last jury I was on they didn't have enough people to choose from, they had to take some from another Jury. They send out over 70 for each jury, and sometimes only 20-30 turn up.

Wait until the jurys getting picked and then tell the clerk that you and the judge are regulars at the same sex club.

That should be enough to be excused from duty

I was called for the high court last year..... rearranged work etc as with the high court you can usually expect to be there a few days. After three days of phoning for updates each night I was dismissed...... waste of a few days tbh.

I was told (but dont take as gospel) if you have been called for court but not actually sat on a jury panel then your name goes back in the hat so to speak. If you did sit on a jury panel your dismissed for a set number of years.

You can also find out in advance what the case is going to be (until the sherrif court) by logging onto the website and look at what cases are booked in. I cant remember if the info is there 3 or 5 weeks in advance.

From what I remember at the time, I was told that if you have to keep calling and don't have to go to the courthouse, they can do that every couple of months until you do have to attend.

If you do attend but don't get picked, you are supposed to be exempt for the next 3 years, and if you serve you're exempt for 5 years.

No idea how rigidly that is stuck to, as I said earlier I served and was called again a year later.

I was then told the records weren't digital so I had to go along to the office. Not been called since.

It's controversial but having done jury duty I actually think it would be better to do away with them. I know that goes against so much of what we consider to be the justice system but I was pretty shocked by what I seen and heard in the jury room.

You had a couple of youngsters who weren't interested at all and took no part in any discussion, people who went totally against explicit directions they were given by the sheriff (because they had a hunch something was being hidden from them), people who were afraid to make a decision either way and people who couldn't get their head around the circumstances of the case at all (a guy assaulted a young girl at a taxi rank on a Saturday night. A couple of the older people there couldn't understand that such a thing was possible, having no idea of the carnage that is a taxi rank on a Saturday night in certain places).

I've been up for dury duty 10 or so times so far. I know others who haven't been called at all.

I've just looked up the juror's handbook provided by the court service. You may excuse yourself from jury service if you've been in the pool but not actually on a jury within the last two years or if you've actually served on a jury in the last five.

It's clear from the language and the procedures they describe, though, that they're not expected to make any effort to make sure they don't ask you within those time frames: you have to spot that you're exempt and return the exemption slip with the correct excuse filled in.

As someone who has a few times had to be excused from jury service, I have read the guidence online & spoken to court staff.

The rules are that:

(1) if you have attended for jury service (i.e. Called up or physically been to court) within the last 2 years you have a "right of excusal" for 2 years; &

(2) if you have sat on a jury (been picked out the bowl) within the last 5 years you have a "right of excusal" for 5 years.

(3) if you are temporarily excused (i.e. Work commitments, holidays, illness, childcare etc) you must be recited within 12 months of your excusal ending.. this effectively puts you to the top of the list to comply with legislation.

So, a "right of excusal" means that you are not automatically exempt, but that you must apply for it. This is explained when you finish jury service. It's really simple as all you have to do these days is email them & state when you last attended/sat with your personal ID number. This is automatically granted & will take you off for the foreseeable.

For temporary excusals, the only way to stop being continually cited is to get a "permanent" medical letter or attend/sit.

Hope this helps, but as I say this is all on their website.

It's really simple as all you have to do these days is email them & state when you last attended/sat with your personal ID number. This is automatically granted & will take you off for the foreseeable.

For temporary excusals, the only way to stop being continually cited is to get a "permanent" medical letter or attend/sit.

Hope this helps, but as I say this is all on their website."

Thanks for this m'dear, you're a star

I got called to high court and was hoping to get called for something exciting.

I sat around all morning and got sent home

Hopefully that means your turn is over... thinking maybe that's the best option I might have... IF I got chosen of course.
