It's probably a simple question to a professional.... how many strips per pattern roll and how much should I pay a decorator ? Is it by the roll or by the hour ? ( my ex did all the diy) xx thanks in advance

If its a standard height room 3 lengths per roll. Sometimes you will get 4 but dont depend on it. As for the cost I would ask for a price. Depends on what prep he has to do etc.

Due to it being patterned you'll get three strips per roll.

Usually a good painter and decorator will charge by the day. Between £100-£150pd.

This is something I do in my spare time.

It will take no more than 8hrs i wouldnt pay any more than 100 pounds ,you should maybe try local college ask for the best paper hanger on the course some of them are really good and always looking for the experience of working onsite

I love it when people give advice when its not even their trade.

Papering is something most try but a true professional can make the ultimate job and deal with any problems that can arise during process.

I know a lot of professional decorators since I started my profession but a lot of them I wouldn't allow to paper loll

Get prices from local companies and also self employed guys. Ask for examples of their work, I'm sure they should be able to produce proof.

then work out whom you think is ideal.

Also get a guarantee, if not done well they will fix the problem.

8hr working day thats £12.50hr way over min wage

I am a painter and usual take 30 quid a roll that's standard price which u get 4 lengths out one roll or always do cheaper if the lady's does favours lol

I'm actually shocked at this and above with the £100 - £150 a day rate. No wonder it's the trade where the self employed struggle the most!

Are you saying 100 pounds a day isnt a decent days wage ?i think its quite reasonable and once youv paid tax ect at end of year your still making 20 odd grand

I quite agree with most comments here 100 a day for cash in hand is ok but if u need garentee and everything u will prob find he has to put it threw books to cover himself just incase as the way of the world these days if he's not put threw books and there's comeback after he could b screwed so u will prob find u will pay top whack when it comes to tradesmen I would never go with the cheapest I'm self employed 20% of everything I take is lost to tax straight away then material ni insurance transport van depreciation blah blah blah these days it's hard to find a very good tradesman willing to do homers as they r so busy"
folk keep writing aboit tax ni transport so on so fourth do you think emlployed dont pay this also cmon get real .most folk who are self employed do so to get a bigger slice of the pie. Theres nothing wrong with that but you cant offset anything claiming it costs you more.

We had a self employed decorator in about 2 months ago.

His charge was £15 per roll. Job required 14 rolls = £210

He was less than a day and a half.

He does however charge £20 a roll for stairways.

My pal tought me how to wall paper yrs ago, she thought I would've got stuck and gave up, not me, I got on with it and showed her a few tricks for corners and other things while wall papering, she asked me how I knew that I told her my dad as we always helped out when my dad was doing diy, it's easy if u know how to do it, it's making a good job Tha matters, myself and my pal even layed her laminate flooring and made an excellent job and she wasted lengths of flooring trying to measure and cut out at corners until I told ger u reverse the sheet for measuring then cut, she hadn't a clue until I showed her how to do it, her sister paid a joiner to put hers down and It wasn't as good a job as what myself and my pal made of hers, her sister said wish she had got myself and my pal to put hers down as we done a brilliant job xx

Plus I showed her how to measure a sheet of flooring to cut out at fireplaces and doorways etc xx

You are not mentioning you van, deisel, public liability, holiday pay, sick pay, down time, accountants fees,phone, advertising, tools etc. The list goes on and on. No way you can clear twenty grand a year charging £12.50 per hour.

If the Op wants to save money then she can get a painter and decorator to do it as a homer, so painter prob take 100 for the day, maybe even less, depending on the job.

The painter will consider some factors for price; What state are walls in, does existing paper need to come off and how bad walls will be to come off, will walls need lined. All of this will need to be considered before job starts and price if given.

If the op wants a perfect job and all guarantees etc..., well its common sense you have to pay for it.

As a business all overheads must be covered in order for the business to continue.

Find a recommended local painter who can do it as a homer, so it will be cheaper.

What I have found is I have a genuine network of people who are all above board and will do a decent job for a decent wage

My Kitchen last year - about 7 half drops (due to tiles etc ) plus paint ceiling - £50

I used to do wall papering, but gave up because it's such a hassle. Now i just paint the walls instead. Keep it simple

I'm at city of Glasgow collage doing a paint n decorating course just now. Will do all u need if u buy what u want I will do it 80 quid a day. Go with 3 strips per wall. Always better to have more you can always return extra you always go atleast one over preferably two.. approx 20%....and any decent professional would charge you atleast 150 per day 100 per day is average for you general homer. Happy to help if needed...

A general homer is classed as a guy who is working during the day and does the job for the person in the evening. So its usually for four or five hours of work so the price is cheaper but also you get less work done than a full days work, obviously.

If the painter works during the day then painter may not be working for a company, just himself so he will have to charge in order to make money, they are all dependant on their needs.

Usually a painter will charge less to paint and paper a bedroom than a kitchen or hall and staircase, why usually because the bedrooms are straightforward.

Word of mouth is usually the best form to get a good priced painter and decorator but I have worked beside painters who are bad and they say they are going to do a homer tonight and I think "fuck paying them to do the work" So word of mouth is taking a chance as well
