A world of my own

So, today is Children in need. I'm sure all agree its a good cause.

However on the annual day of celebrities, large organizations and millions given - please for a moment consider donating to smaller charities.

The ones who don't get the limelight but work tirelessly 24/7 and 365 days a year all over the UK.

Some may even be local to you. Making a difference to lives in your comminuty or in your circles of family or friends.

Unsung heroes who dedicate themselves because they really care and want to make a difference and empower or support others.

I work for a charity and every day I'm inspired and moved by the stories and the people.

I feel very lucky to be able to go to work and the focus is to make things better. Not to make some corporate a big profit.

So if you plan to donate today, please consider other causes.

Thanks xxxx

Smaller charities also benefit from children in need. But not all though,I support a local charity close to my heart especially around easter, Halloween & Christmas.

I think as the op said small charities need our help so much to , there are so many causes out there and it's hard to choose who to donate to but everyone of them ..Even a little goes a long way ,I've done many events as a chef I always try to help at the local charity bake sales was up one year for three nights solid personalising cookies for a local charity but def worth it, would do it again we raised loads and even though I was seeing cookies in my sleep for a. Week after I now make the best cookies ever that recipe has been well and truly perfected lol xx

Couldn't agree more! I work for a small local mental health charity and have had funding cuts this year which has drastically reduced the service we can provide.

Always try and support small and local (for business/charity rather than sex!)

While children in need is a great idea, given the anoint of celebrities involved it makes me wonder how much these celebrities actually give on the night.

The car group on facebook that I'm a part of have done 2 charity events this year, giving £1300 to the scottish air ambulance, and £1600 to a local autism charity.

Both local and both very worthwhile.

And remember a donation is not always in cash!!

Many people forget that you can donate clothes, books/dvds and toys that the kids have grown out of and are still in good condition.

For instance, The Sick children's hospital in Edinburgh will take your books, dvds etc to put in the play areas in the wards for children that are staying for a bit.

If animals are your thing. You can donate animal food or bedding to help with looking after the animals.

Every little helps.

I'm in a really fortunate position that my employer will always match any fundraising I do so I try to encourage my team to take part in something every second month. Just had sign off for them to donate 1000 kids selection boxes to hospitals/food banks and children's homes. Doesn't sound a lot but when you take into account these kids often have nothing on Christmas morning it can provide a smile.

I'd encourage everyone to look at their works policies/HR because a lot of big companies do this sort of thing but don't actively go out their way to promote it all the time!

As mentioned above donating doesn't always need to be in cash. Something as small as going to an old folks home and reading to them is priceless

I agree. Very few declare what they pledge (if anything) leaving us to ponder this point. If these celebs and A-listers gave a fraction of their earnings/wealth, the target would be reached in no time.

Wouldn't be surprised if the general public gives more as a percentage of their earnings than s'lebs do.

Just don't give to doorstep collectors as only a fraction of the cash generated goes to the cause advertised.

doorstep collectors are neither here nor there. in regards to charity rip offs research for yourself before deciding on a charity. Some would find it shocking how little of a pound makes it to what they have given too.

I used to give to help for heroes (being ex military it made sense),until I found out more money went to lining pockets than helping injured personnel

The BBC benefit from "Children in Need"..

There are many varied charities and it would probably practically impossible to donate to all.

I personally give to a charity that is more closer to home.

I volunteer for a charity at the moment however in the past I did quite a lot if fund raising for one charity or another and yes my company matched everything I made.

Then I discovered when I handed over my cash that the office overheads had to be covered, including the admin, manager, area manager etc up the ladders salaries had to be covered. So I stopped.

I currently teach English to non - English speaking adults, I work at my local foodbank, teach computing to the terrified and counsel or offer Reiki therapies FREE of charge to folk on Benefits or in bad mental health at my local College,

I always believed charity was there to help the unfortunate, poor or whatever and not line corporate pockets
