I have two laptops one is older and has no protection on it and works just fine... Mind you I'm very sensible re what I view, download or open... my question to all you lovely and very informed Fab Folk is... Is virus protection on your PC/Laptop really necessary??? I've been given very differing opinions including one that says that Macafee causes more problems than it solves??? Some say the free ones like AVG are just as good as the expensive ones???

Also phones can do just as much as laptops and you don't get the hard sell on virus protection when you get one of those although I know you can do that... What's your thoughts folks???

(I expect to be even more confused btw )

Yes, but only use windows defender, don't pay for anything.

Yup windows defender is fine as long as you are using a mainstream browser and not downloading anything naughty.

Free protection I would go for k9 in conjunction with malware bytes.

Works fine plus malware bytes as back up

Use AVG and get spy doctor installed also.

If you have Norton anti virus installed and not yet paid for it uninstall it and get AVG put on it.

Also down load a programme called CCleaner which will delete alot of unwanted data and free up space.

Never have two - they slow down, conflict and just will not play ball. Only ever one antivirus, and defender is OK

Think I did find that though I'm not great with these things. Pretty sure that's what the old laptop has and it's fine, I'm guessing that's why, cheers m'dear

Using Avast and Windows Defender will obviously cause a conflict, you should only ever use one anti-virus!!

Instead, install AVG or Avast free anti-virus. Also install Malwarebytes, and for good measure, install free Ccleaner and run it on a regular basis.

I think virus protection for computers is aimed at the elderly& the not so computer savvy, I've had 2 computers, 7 laptops, 2 tablets and not 1 virus.
