Is it just coincidence?

I was just reading about someone having fab friends popping up on "people you may know" on Facebook...

I have also seen a post on Facebook that someone was chatting about condoms (I can't actually remember what they said, so we will say condoms for the topic) Anyway, these people were chatting and their phone was sitting next to them, they look at Facebook and a "sponsors page" pops up for condoms....

I've actually had it happen. Me and a friend were chatting about a particular person (they have never actually been suggested to me before) when I looked at my Facebook, after the conversation, he was the first one to come up on my "people you may know"

Okay. Other people on a thread I just read seem to think different

Fab and Facebook aren't linked, there no possible way for them to exchange contacts like that. If u see someone on Facebook that you've seen on fab it is coincidence 100%

Unless you've spoken to said person on a phone or through email or Kik, these things keep data like a contact that then would work through Facebook because Facebook reads the data on your phone "if aloud by you" and adds them as people you may know.

That'll be your cookies. Have often received emails, pop ups or adverts on things I've searched for or talked about in a forum. Annoying and feel that's there's no privacy left.

Mind you, I'm still waiting on that email from 'two sexy ladies', lol

Yep, cookies and targeted advertising. It runs on some sort of algorithm if I remember right. Delete your cookies regularly to slow it down but it will never stop

Google and Facebook deny using people's microphone to listen to "mutterings" but just because they deny it doesn't mean they are telling the truth.

There's also the fact that it could be because you are watching for it you will see it. If I told you there are lots of yellow cars you will be subconsciously looking for these yellow cars. There's always coincidences in the world and because people can pass on their experience of it happening to so many others, then more people are looking for it so the probability of other people talking about it goes up.

So who knows if it's Facebook/Google or just coincidence. Switch off your microphone and see if it makes a difference

You sign up for apps like Facebook and you are agreeing to them almost taking control of your phone. Have a look at the permissions you have signed up to, its mental.

I'm not on Facebook so can't look at that one but I do agree that it is crazy that they have free reign over your phone.

Also it's never happened to me

If you have someone on here saved as a phone number you start showing on their Facebook page and you see theirs.

Get a PAYG phone!

Sorry, I didn't make it clear. The said thread I was reading, the lady said that she had these fab members on whstsapp and then they appeared on fb.

I know something was going down with the microphone on your phone but I didn't think it was true.

What if it is they would be listening to pretty fucked up conversations from my end lol

Its not coincidence, they are watching you, just you though.

They want to know everything about you, what cereal you eat, whinyou eat it with, if you are one of those weirdos who put milk in first.

Whether or not you have the hang of Thursdays.

I can't say why.

But you know what you did!

I've already said too much...

Or it could just be the cookie thing that everyone was talking about

Yes it true, there was a piece on him recently and in the photo you could see his laptop, when questioned he was open about why he did it.

Of course it does. Doesn't matter who you are, unless the device is airgapped they can spy

I honesty believe that all these things data mine your phone...looking through contacts, and links. I once on facebook had a lady friends son show up as a possible you may know. Coz he accessed fb on her phone..im sure!!

Pretty horrendous stuff actually...Big Brother is watching you!!!

Facebook are absolutely not listening to your conversations. I had this chat recently, none of us are saying anything THAT worth listening to. Think of the actual practicalities of it, do they choose randomly who to listen to or employ one staff member per user?

The reason the app needs permission for your mic is because you can make voice calls through messenger.

Either that or its the illuminati

It's probably not coincidence. All these sites run cookies and the ads react to them. They're called tracker ads I think. I had to explain this to a friend after he had a moan about Thai hookers appearing in his Facebook ads

Facebook owns Whatsapp, so if you've whatsapped with someone you've met through fab, they'll likely show up on people you may know, as FB will have cross referenced the phone numbers used in whatsapp.

Also the iPhone location services tracks your location. This happened to me on FB alone. I set up an FB page for my business and started getting clients show up in my 'people you may know' section, but with not mutual friends. I thought it was because they'd viewed my FB work page but no, it's because FB used the location data to determine these people and I were in close proximity to each other for a prolonged period.

If FB can use this data, I'm sure other websites can too. Eg. Safari
