AVG is free and never had any issues with it, never asks for money and updates are all free, used it for over 20 years in IT industry.

Another option is just to turn on Windows Defender which comes free with Windows - in comparison testing it is pretty good.

Make sure you enable the auto updates so it downloads new virus signatures regularly.

I worked in IT with a hacker who swears by AVG his machines all have the free version on them

If it's good enough for him then it works for me and I've been using it since I first seriously needed protection

Like others I've used AVG for years, however like any free software is does have down-sides.

Updates, unless it's for a "big name" virus are a few days later than the premium/paid members, and the amount of pop-ups and adverts for its own products can become annoying.

Two things you can learn to ignore, but still may be enough to put some people off.

Had used free AVG for years but recently put free Avast on a new laptop, just because of the number of pop-ups I was getting from AVG. However, I think it might have calmed down a bit recently, on my desktop.

Avg is probably best long as you don't mind the odd pop up. Otherwise just combine Windows defender with malware bytes

I've also used AVG for years.

Can be a bit of a pain in the arse with pop-ups but I'm sure there will be a way to remove them.

Avast is the best for me. Combine it with Super Antispyware free an Malwarebytes Free and you have trouble free computing

I used avg for years but switched to Avast as it gets consistently higher ratings in tests. Windows Defender is consistently bottom of the pile so sling it a deafy.

All the free ones have become more prone to popups of late.

AVG, when you install the free one will offer you a trial of the full version. At the end you jab the option to go back to the free version. Every now and again you'll get another trial.
