Been scammed need advice

Jump to newest

Bout a month ago I joined another swinger site, it lured me in with a free membership and "women" interested in meeting me,the free trial they give you runs out after a few messages and they give you two options £10 a month or a one off payment of £40 for a lifetime membership, now I know that sounds too good to be true but when your a horny idiot who's just been chatting to a sexy woman who is making plans to meet that night and ur messages run out ye don't use your brain, so I foolishly joined up and paid £40 before that I emailed the site admin asking if it was a one off payment just for confirmation and they told me yes 100% so once I paid NO CONTACT from said woman, checked my bank account today and they have taken more money from me.

I have emailed them several times and they refuse to reply to me, it's obvious I've been a fool and have been scammed but the advice I need is can I go to the bank and cut off all future payments to them or will I have to open a new bank account?

Thanks x

Go to your bank and explain to them that this person/company are taking money without you authorisation and ask them to stop any further payments, not sure if you will get any of the overpayments back though.

Was payment via DD or was it a card payment?

If it was a card payment then tbh cancel card, it's the only way to guarantee not to be charged again

But contact the bank anyway and explain to them, just be honest about what the site was n such, they'll hope people are too scared to admit what site they were on and be forced to keep paying

thanks I don't care if I don't get the money back I just don't want to lose any more.

The site also doesn't allow anyone to delete their account as to keep taking money. If anyone wants the name of the site mail me and al tell you, don't want anyone else getting trapped like this

You can ring the bank now and get is stopped as fraud. Illegally taking money without your consent. I'm sure there's a dedicated 24 hour phone number.

Report it to the bank as a unlawful payment. They'll issue you with a new debit card and cancel the old one so they can't take anymore payments.

If it was done on your bank card then it could have been set up as a 'Continuous Payment Authority' so they keep debiting the card.

From what I know cancelling the card isn't enough so go to the bank and get them onto it

A CPA can be difficult to get sorted out

I got scammed at Xmas time but not from a swinging site. But the bank understood and took the name of the account and blocked them from taking any more payments and issued a new card. Don't worry, you won't be the first one and you won't be the last.

They only want the company name so if they have more complaints from other bank account holders then they can be done with fraud.

Tip - use a 'virtual card' or a prepaid debit card for such payments in future. No matter what they can only get the funds you load onto the card AND they are easy to cancel/reissue online.

Google entropay for a decent starting point. Oh, and some sites won't accept them... usually a very good inidcator that they're up to no good!

Your bank's fraud line shouldn't be a charged line. If it is, look for the international number and just call that. They're usually just a uk number with the international prefix.

If your debit card is a visa then if you call them they will reverse the payments hastle free for you.they offer the same guarantees on a debit card that you get with a credit card. Mastercard can be long and drawn out.

Your bank can cancel a cpa if you ask them to, I've been there myself with sites that require you to cancel your membership by phone. Didn't trust it so phoned the bank and sent the sites an email politely suggesting that they go and fuck themselves. If they have your card details though... I don't know, the bank will probably give the best advice.

A CPA is easily cancelled by most banks mate. Just get straight down there and tell them what's happening ASAP. They might even be able to refund the last payment for you too

Never knew this. Always knew that was the case with a credit card but thought a debit card was different/less likely to get refunded, etc

If the bank asks what sorta site it was, just tell them you thought it was a dating site.

The bank won't ask what kind of site it was. All they want is the details of the payment that came out of your account and they will block it.

Whether they re-imburse you is doubtful.

Worth putting the story up on Trust Pilot - you can do it annonymously but at least it acts to warn others. Its always worth checking out websites somewhere else before parting with card details.
