Irn-Bru - ginger bottles

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

hubby - came home from the local shop today and he was spitting feathers !!

Apparently they have stopped selling "Glass bottles of irn-bru"

He reckons the glass bottle of "ginger" is another scottish icon that going to disapear like the "pound note"...

Anyone else noticed this or do they prefer the convenience of the over priced plastic bottles ?? and are our kids or even us adults so spoiled these days that they are embarrased to take empty bottles back to the shops nowadays ??

what ever happend to the "Bon-Accord" man ??

There's still glass bottles aplenty in Glasgow. It's a bit crazy though when a glass bottle costs about 65 or 70 pence and a 2 litre plastic bottle is often on 2 for £2 offer and you don't have to worry about disposing of the plastic bottles 'cos every school in Scotland seems to be building a greenhouse from them

Barrs have, according to the media, stopped selling 'diet' Irn Bru and will now be selling 'sugar free' Irn Bru.

They got rid of the wee dumpy bottles that used to have so much gas in them that it made me sneeze if I tried to have a drink within 2minutes of opening it!

still tasted better than the rip off £1.20 500ml bottles!

"yeh and anyone else noticed how flippin hard it is to open those damn plastic bottles.....thats the only thing I miss my ex for.

About the middle of last year Barrs started using plastic caps which are a couple of mm shorter than before. It's maybe saving a fraction of a penny per cap but when you think of the number Barrs go through it probably amounts to quite a sum.

The downside is that they're a lot harder to grip if you have bigger hands.

Like 44 i was a 3 bottle a day man, the glass botlle comes in all 16 flavours.

Most shops get 40-50 crates, however plastic was making the money as each driver has special offers to punt more juice.

The crates returned make the money, with the refund a incentive to guzzle more (44).

Coca cola want Barrs to vanish as it oustells the real thing everytime.

At Christmas time there a lot of glass did shatter due to the cold, cans popped and plastic well its plastic.

Glad I am not the only one who hates this!

And I can still buy glass bottles, you take em back and you get 20p off the next one...shimples!

Ginger - How terribly '0141'!

"Ginger - Generic term for carbonated minerals. Despite billions of dollars spent on brand recognition and advertising, in Glasgow, Coke, Pepsi, Seven-up, Sprite and all other carbonated soft drinks are referred to as 'ginger'.

My grandfather called it 'skoosh'. From the era when the bottles had screw tops that fitted inside the neck of the bottle.

Local shop here does a roaring trade selling glass bottles of barr's

My kid and his pals make a wee fortune collecting and returning all the bottles the tourists don't return.

I remember being paid to clean out the family car each week when I was a kid and I was paid in bottles - if I found it I kept it

I havent drank anything out a glass bottle in years, I can taste the metal from the lids.

However the guy downstairs only drinks barrs and only in glass bottles, now his aunty does his housework for him and deposits the bags of bottles at my door "for the girls a bit more to top up their pocket money" so here in fife my kids still go to the shops with their free bottles and get their magazines/crisps/sweet/different juice.

Smart kids then save the money we give then for the CD/DVD/toy they want

But judging by the amount of glass smashed beside the local chip shop I would say not many actually return them anymore.

lol, Stirling area seems to have it's own wee rules with dialect sometimes sure there's quite few things that we say differenty. Seems to be the only accent that people just cant recognise either - most people know Glasgow, Fife etc

I think if they want people to hand the bottles back they need to raise the 20p reward! must be the only thing that never moved with inflation even 10p crisps cost 25p now!

i felt such a rage today - another small local shop near to us..

Has stopped selling the glass bottles - and it seems to be the small shops !!

lets make a petition for the local tescos etc to stock the bottles ??

this is recycling - kids learn and earn from recycling gingers bottles !!

and even adults !! - cmon - who hasnt taken a load of glass cheques to the shop for something !!

ffs - i think barrs and the bon-accord man - were the global leaders in recycling..

its ok - iv shut the door on ma way out x

The margin on the small plastic bottles is probably better + storing all those crates of glass empties takes up a lot of valuable backshop floor space.
