Had to use up leftover Xmas cake fruit today so I turned it into a clootie dumpling. At the same time I was messaging a fab friend who said he'd never heard of it. I've promised him tales of childhood in grandmas kitchen. Anybody got fond memories theyd like to share?

ahh the drying by the fire and wanting the skin side of the clootie dumpling.

Myself and my cousins were always amazed when granny always managed to give us all a bit and each of us had a sixpence in it.. Was only years later as we grew up we found out she placed the sixpence in each portion so as one kid wouldn't be left disappointed at not funding one lol

My mum and I used to make it every year.

Sad memories, as the only year we didn't was the year she passed away. We never got round to it. Was meant to be done that weekend.

Such happy memories of "the beastie" drying out at the side of the coal fire and if it split on the top my granny would call it a "laughing dumpling".

I don't make them, in our house its mr that makes the clooties. he got the recipe from his mum not long before she passed away (none of his 3 sisters did)... there are 'secret' ingredients!
