Just been watching the news,where they were talking about voting to scrap trident,then went on to say the final vote on it will take place in Westminster.

I'm not very clued up on politics,so perhaps someone could explain what was the point in voting on it if Westminster is gonna decide what happens?

I'm not interested in arguments for or against trident as that's a whole different can of worms.

Military laws are governed by the houses of parliament.the Scottish labour and Snp can vote on issues that affect Scotland and try to gather influence in house of commons to swing a vote their way if Scottish maps and mps have a mandate from scotish representatives.confuddled ...yes me to but that. Is the why of your question dlt

This massive U-turn is all about the remnants of labour's Scottish branch office trying to portray themselves as independent of London control....yet we all know that they don't even like the word independent, never mind the concept!

Traditionally, before the Blair-Brown-Mandelson neo-liberal takeover and lurch to the right, the party was hostile to trident WMD and that remained the position even after the departure of the psychopath, the sociopath and the Machiavelli.

Fearing the same wipe-out at Holyrood next May which they suffered at the GE (although that will be mitigated by PR), the branch office knew they had to do something to stem the massive erosion in their support.

So now the adopted position of Scottish labour, although in harmony with Jezza's way of thinking, is opposed by their leader (don't laugh!) Kez-Dug, their last remaining MP (but only thanks to tory tactical votes) Ian Murray, the vast majority of English labour MP's and many of the union barons in Scotland.

Meanwhile the only cohesive opposition to a rampant right-wing tory administration comes from the SNP.

Interesting times.

Seems like a bit of dogs dinner to be honest.

In Scotland you have labour members against trident, but the Scottish leader is for it.

Nationally the party are for trident but the leader is against it.

Trident will always split opinion whether within a political party or not. Some people see it as morally wrong others see it part of the defence of the country. I bet the Ukrainians were very glad they gave up their nuclear weapons so they could let Russia annexed a large part of their country. The debate will continue not matter which party is in power.

How does voting for the same position as Corbyn 'fool the Scottish electorate' into thinking we're independent of UK Labour?

I can tell this is about to slide into the bitter political debate that you were hoping to avoid! Succinctly put...we are governed by Westminster Tory government and defence is a reserved issue I.e. What Westminster says goes! The Scottish Labour Party is governed by the uk Labour Party. The Scottish Labour Party has voted to dismantle trident, the Scottish labour leader is for trident. The U.K. Party has voted to keep trident, the U.K. Leader is against it! Clear?

And by adopting an openly SNP policy Scottish labour is trying to garner back some of the votes lost to SNP at Westminster elections and lay down a marker to the national Labour Party that they won't be run like a constituency office as accused by Joanna Lamont when in charge. They are hoping to avoid the devastating losses at polls next year by becoming indistinguishable from main rivals how did that work out when they became the Tory party with red ties
