Someone Help Me Out ...

I was going to buy an Iphone for £97.

I dont have any Money.

So i borrow £50 from Fab and £50 from a Moderator.

I purchase the Phone and i have £3 change.

I give Fab a £1 back ..I give the Moderator a £1 back ..and i keep the other £1 for Myself.

I now owe Fab and the Moderator £49 each.

£49 + £49 = £98 ...Plus My £1 Makes it £99.

Where is the missing £1

GO

By keeping £1 you have effectively spent £98 of someone elses money you have paid £2 back resulting in you still oweing 2×£49 to clear your debt

why did you keep a £1 yourself, you should have paid back £1.50 each

or just borrowed £48.50 each?

Inverness

You then borrowed £98, you now have a £97 shirt and £1 cash. Which is the total of what you borrowed.

East kilbride

You effectively spent £98

97 on phone + 1 for yourself = 98

You gave £1 back to each on the original 50 loan so still in debt to 49 each (98)

If i gave back a £1 on the original £50 ..

£49 x 2 = £98

I kept the other £1

Where is the other ?

The trick to this is that the original question tries to confuse you with mixing apples and pears, as it were. i.e. one minute you are looking at what was borrowed the next looking at what has been repaid.

It is simple, there is no "missing" pound other than the one you have kept for yourself.

You borrowed £100. Spent £97. That leaves three pounds one of which you keep for yourself. You gave them one pound each, which makes the total 97 + 1 + 1 = 99. You have kept one pound for yourself - that is the missing pound which, if added, makes the total of £100. That was the sum originally borrowed and tallies exactly.
