Just back from the Wickerman festival down in dumrfrieshire. 1st timed I'd been and really enjoyed myself. Overall a very well orginised and well run festival. No problems with stewards ect, a generally very friendly atmosphere, lots of kids, Brilliant weather.
It wasn't overley crowded, but busy enough, which I liked and was reasonably compact in size. Although situated in the most amazing countryside, hills surrounding you, one never feel penned in.
Tbh, the line up wasn't great, I don't know how much of this is just personal taste and how much genuine blandness it contained. Although I saw a few amazing performances and saw some bands that I'd previously planned to check out. Also the dance tent and terrace area were pretty good late at night, although perhaps it could have been a bit busier. In fact it was a bit of a shame, as into the wee small hours of Sunday Optimo were DJing in the large bar tent. The music was great but it wasn't that busy and contained many who wouldn't normally appreciate the music.
Also they Burn a Hugh wicker statue that has been overlooking the festival for the whole time. Come midnight on Saturday night torches are put to his legs, and up he goes, accompanied by a fantastic firework display and a very nice general vibe.
Overall a very good festival and I would definetly go againt. Although as previously mentioned The Bill could play a large part in my decision. I just felt that the whole festival was too small to have such an unimaginative line up. Where as Glastonbury, I could quite happily spend 4 days there and not see a major act or not at least plan to do so. However should I change my mind and want to mingle with the great unwashed I could see a large name act, probably even one I liked, at any time of the day.
Glastonbury however, is at the other end of the country, is so damm expensive these days and usually sells out in a day. Wickerman was a 1.5 hour drive away and cost less than £100. So I thought it was really good value.
I also must mention the Accoustic village area of the festival and inparticular their Ingrid Pit word tent that played host to all manner of performances. From music to poetry, plays, comedians, open mic slots, it was great. It also had great wee benches and sitting down was a nice comfort. |
