Brought on by another post.who believes the idea of the living wage will actually ever happen (the actual principal of it not just a wage hike)?

Not everyone on benefits is lazy or work shy.

And tax fraud/evasion costs us more than benefits does, so perhaps companies like Vodafone should pay their bill and we'd be a bit better off

if you only get a 1% pay rise its not the living wage.......as for lazy work shy benefit scroungers getting 5% lol amazing there are folk believe this any increase is taken straight back by other means. Most folk on benefits im sure hate it and would much prefer to be in a job they could afford to have (not zero hour contract at min wage)

To be honest. This statement is the correct one. Fix tax loops and then get a proper audit of the country done. Any company which spends as much money as a country needs to be externally audited so does this country.

That includes councils. Get accountants (as boring as they are to sometimes deal with) and work out the root cause please government. Run protectively not reactively

Don't be daft, why ruin the gravy train?

As for your original post kola, whilst it seems a good idea, I'm sure there will be a spanner thrown in the works long before 2020

Well at least it is more than Labour or the SNP had promised. I would expect the anti-austerity SNP govt, to give all our civil servants a far bigger rise than the measly one percent........which they richly deserve.

A fair few employers are signed up to the UK living wage and/or local initiatives that guarentee that all their employees earn a minimum of £7.85 per hour this has to include casual, bank and zero hour contracts. It also includes any staff contracted to work on the business premises (i.e your suppliers).

The announcement to increase the national minimum wage, now branded living wage, a minimum of £9 by 2020 is not before time - however I am concerned about the impact on businesses across the country. Not every business is cash rich as was implied.

Whilst I hold strong views about fair pay it should not be to the detriment of those businesses that cannot afford it.

To my mind it makes not a blind bit of diffrence what the min wage is its whether the govt will allow it and not re-coup the money by other means.

Take the bedroom tax. benefits are given to take folk onto the breadline (not as some think to live the high life) but the bedroom tax was taken after these calculations so in effect the govt was breaking its own rules.by taking folk under the breadline by whatever margin they make the tennant pay. My question was do you ever think we will see an honest to god living wage that the govt wont dip into when they see fit

Plus there is more in unclaimed benefits each year than there is in benefit fraud. Although not letting folk know they are entitled to it coud equal corporate fraud. . .

".

Depends what you call evasion!!!!

I pay £2000 a month into my pension which is £1200 on my net pay and the other £800 is made up of tax that would have been deducted from my normal gross wage

which means that I receive 40% tax debate and when its time to draw pension pay the lower rate back

they majority of higher band tax payers do this, its within the rules and the Government encourages you to do it

exactly the same as companies finding legal loopholes not to pay tax, There are many legal ways to get round paying tax and when you are being taxed 40% of earnings all your life, you need to find ways of making that money work for you.

agree?

The SNP are only anti-austerity so they can continue to pick a fight with the Tories.

Just have to let them all get on with it and make do the best you can

I know a young girl who works for council, has done for 10 years since leaving school, good full time job which pays very poorly

Due to that she has 2 further part time jobs to boost up poor council pay, did you know regardless of low earnings, if you have a third job it is automatically tax deducted at the higher wage bracket, she had to give up her third job as it wasn't worth while

With the high tax bracket and ever changing rules we are contemplating moving out of the UK.

it's getting ridiculously stupid with too many rules and regulations for the working man.

Take the last comment. Someone is willing to work three jobs to earn a living yet because of our tax laws she gets penalised for working.

The UK is weak when it comes to decision making and it's the working class that are suffering.

That's my Sunday morning rant

I so agree the SNP position is not anti -austerity...it is an anti-Tory agenda, with a big dollop of we are all victims thrown in to appeal to the chip on the shoulder scots. I certainly do not feel a victim, but i agree that those who work hard, like that woman who had three jobs should be rewarded for there work ethic.

still don't see her as a woman, see her as my child, and help her every way I can, so proud she is a worker though and although the council pays a poor wage her job is valid for the community

I find the 'third job = higher rate tax" hard to believe except where it takes the worker into that bracket by reason of earnings.

absolutely not

£17k salary and 2nd job as a carer for special needs, as and when required, 3rd job was similar, but if you have a 3rd job its automatic higher tax bracket

I've done a bit of digging (not dogging) and it looks as if any circumstances in which this happens are due to an incorrect or emergency tax code.

Reckon by the time it comes into effect inflation will lower its value anyway.

Min/living wage whatever you want to call it.....it just barely amounts to scraping by and can't see that changing anytime soon.
