Need some advice about this is anyone in a position to advise? Reading online it seems I could potentially end up doing 2 years of study (I need to re take maths to teach English apparently!) And then be told by gtcs that I can't teach!

Can anyone help?

Your best bet is to contact the admissions for the pgde programme, they'd be able to point you in the right direction. Assuming it's a pgde you're going for!

More complicated than that. It's not the pvg check looking like it might be a problem

I believe it is similar to the Enhanced Disclosure in England and Wales.

They check for any convictions you may have and the time they have been spent are taken into consideration.

Depending on what's on your pvg, the reason for it, the length of time since it happened and the policy of your potential employer....a lot of factors. Also an entry can stay on your pvg for 15 years or until you are 50...again certain conditions.

I don't even know if anything will be on the pvg. Belle70 is it OK to pm you? You seem to know your stuff.

PVG provides prospective employers with the following information

1. If you are on the banned list for children

2. If you are on the banned list for vulnerable adults

3. If you are on the banned list for both

It then provides additional information if present and considered relevant. This might be a conviction or it might be police intelligence. It doesn't give detail that is unnecessary

If you are worried because you are on a swing site don't - as others have said PVG is for convictions or cautions for sexual (or other potentially damaging) activity with minors, or vulnerable adults - if there is going to be something on it then you'd probably already be aware of it.

I'm actually applying for mine too, the PVG check is pretty simple and would only be a problem if you had a relevant criminal record...so, for example, fraud probably wouldn't be considered anything bad (and financially speaking it's not a credit check either!) but assault of some sort of sexual assault would be.

As someone already said, it's not a check of your internet background or anything like that!

Maybe I'll see you on the course, what Uni you going to?

The causes for actual full on barring of people are pretty strict. Anyone even considered for barring has a full opportunity to argue their side of the case and prove they have remedied their past actions. If you're even remotely considering a career in teaching it would weigh heavily in your favour as an attempt to help redeem yourself unless it was inappropriate behaviour directly towards kids you were convicted of.

No convictions but enhanced check raises the potential for any contact with police to be mentioned if the police think it's relevant.

Anyway I've finally found out it's possible to request info from police direct. Need to complete a police form just.

Took all day weekend and a day of phone calls to find that out!

Swinging not an issue as I know several teachers who swing (and a few more now from this thread).

I posted here because I don't know anyone who knows about PVG or scots law or current Scottish teacher training procedures to the poster who thought it was inappropriate posting here.

I had already tried posting on other Internet forum but got very little response.

Pvg & disclosure are only ok on the day they are granted. After that it's up to you to tell your workplace of any convictions!!!

A case like this only last week guy was a janitor in a primary school had been downloading child porn. Only discovered because he used school Internet & found it all on his home computer going back years

Nothing to hide. Due to an old family situation. Nobody harmed.

Actually the pvg scheme has an ongoing monitoring system. Any subsequent convictions trigger a referral by the court which disclosure Scotland process. They contact the informed countersignator informing them the scheme members details have changed. It was part of the reason pvg was set up, to continuously monitor and protect vulnerable groups.
