Edinburgh Cyclists claims

Big hoo hah about riders (hundreds they claim) chasing the council for compensation due to accidents involving the tram tracks.

I used to race regularly. Cycled as a courier in Edinburgh; also for fun, commuting and just general arsing around.

I can't see how anyone can blame the council for their own lack of basic handling skills on a push bike.

People getting their wheels stuck/ lodged in the tracks is just crazy. Open your eyes, ride away from them, if you have to cross them cross them at right angles or lift your front wheel over them. Really not difficult.

It's going to get to the point where the council just have 'no bike' zones in the centre to prevent claims.

Heard one 'lawyer' on radio Scotland this morning who just sounded like he was using this as an excecise to drum up more business.

Thoughts? Should/ can the council do more or are we just succumbing to the U.S. Claim culture more and more; or are lawyers as much to blame by fuelling the fire?

say that again:It's going to get to the point where the council just have 'no bike' zones in the centre to prevent claims.

Best thing ive read all day

count me in for voting "NO BIKE ZONES" as in bicycle no bicycle zones, either that or hack their legs off

cyclists are biggest pain in the back side ever

just my polite view, now where do I vote or sign petition for this?

I am very pro cyclist and I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush. Some decent folks who can ride out there. Guaranteed the ones claiming are all middle management; not been on a bike since their teens; got their bike from Evans on 'bike to work' and now feel it's their God Given to get from A to B unhindered.

Disagree, we live in the countryside with narrow winding roads, lots of tight corners, got round one corner and what did we come across, a family on bicycles, the 2 kids under the age of 8 by the looks of them, one was on stabilisers, and this was no way the road for them as many drive fast on these roads,

I don't blame the kids but I do blame the parents, and yes we all know that you should drive at speeds you can stop in time,

but what people should do, and what they actually do are 2 different things, many roads are just far too dangerous for cyclists

Are you arguing that cars shouldn't use the roads or victim blaming?

We were happy when we thought we were in the "occasionally amusing and sometimes opinionated" category.

Ecstatic we've made it to the hot sphere lol

"Free up the roads..shoot a cyclist "

I take exception to your post, two years ago my fathers friend, was knocked over dying on the strathmiglo road by a woman overtaking. Within six months, both his father and mother died from the shock of their sons death.

The Speed family suffered, due to a mother and daughter both driving different cars in convoy.

Does anyone have more right to be one place more than another?

I guess vehicle owners would argue they pay for the roads and insurance as well as a whole heap of fuel tax.

Cyclists? (I'm pro cycling remember) zip.

Don't think you can flippantly say cyclists have the right of the road. If there were no cars and just bikes and horses, we'd have no roads, we'd still be on dirt.

There's room there for everyone on the roads - and I drive everything on them.

Would be good to see some Danish/ Dutch style cycle/ moped friendly lanes on the roads where possible. Especially for busy commuter routes (take them away from the tram lines for example). They take it really seriously over there and it works for everyone.

Though this, 'they're better than them' is kinda getting off the purpose of the original thread.

Country roads point is a good call. We're hicks ourselves too originally. I had to bollock a driver who I was a passenger with at the weekend for doing 60-70 along similar in Dumfrieshire. If anything had been round some of those corners, be it bike, car, walker, we were all goners.

If we had decent cycle lanes such as in Holland - where they also have trams! we would not have so many problems.

Agreed. That said, I'm sure they have as many 'offs' as they've had in Edinburgh. They just haven't got the greed to pursue and not take responsibility yet. Thankfully.

the roads were always there they are tarred and manufactured to help cars lorrys and other heavy motorised vehicles hence the reason for the taxation as it is my point was apart from motorways (which cyclists and pedestrians cant use) they are the peoples roads and not the domain of motor vehicles only

Absolute nonsense

the main purpose of roads are for vehicles and pavements for people, you going to tell your kids to play on the roads and if so that is simply foolish

Are you also a fuel head burning the life out of this planet? do you use a fuel burling vehicle or fuel burning transport, if so you are just as guilty, perhaps more guilty if you try and convince people that they have more rights to roads than transport,

no blue peter badge for you.

the main purpose of roads is to connect places they were there long before motorised vehicles our whole highway code is set with the pedestrian as king unlike other countrys where the vehicle is king as ive said the reason you pay tax is its vehicles need the smooth surface and no im not a driver dont use any vehicle if journey is less than two miles

Roads come from general taxation, there's been no road tax since the 30's. It should have been obvious in the design phase that the tracks were going to be a danger at that point of the road due to the funny angles they're at.

I cycle about 3000 miles a year and I'd stay away from that junction with a road bike if I could avoid it.. It's like wacky races in a car, never mind adding the danger of the tracks if you have to swerve to avoid someone.

its a bit like in other cities where they blame potholes, people just trying to get some free money,

the bottom line with roads no matter how you look at it is they are designed for various type of road user be it pedestrian, cyclist, animal, or motor vehicle of the various types, they all have their own rules, its just a shame that so many out there no matter what type they are don't know the simple rules they should be adhering to or blatantly just ignore them

I believe the claims centre mainly around one junction where the layout had made it impossible to avid crossing the tramlines and very hard to do so at a safe angle. It's not random claiming or people who can't figure out how to cross the lines.

A depressing amount of angry, dismissive, ill-informed folk in cycling threads every time they come up. Just seems to be one of those topics that brings out the Mr Angry in folk.

The lady responbile for the death of a family friend was found guilty today. She deleted the call record from her phone, by talking while driving she failed to pay attention to the road.
