Is that not rolling out those skill centres again 6 months training and giving them mickey mouse certificate after it , they weren't tradesmen after it , we learned our trade over time and experience , everyday was a learning day

Quality has went right down hill over the years, can't get the staff and the staff you do get aren't worth the time and effort spent keeping them right

It's all plug in gadgets now they are taught , everything has sensors on it , or it's just the quick or lazy way to do something now , the pride has gone

how many times do we have to hear the we are real tradesmen a training course blah blah blah.If you are reasonable clever a good training will give you the skills you need. A shit 4 year aship is not as good as a good training. Unfortunately there can be poor training in both and with most things the goverment tries it can be poor as its just to fix the number and feed their mate who run shit training companies. I have been lucky enough to have done lots of training and have experienved both. Not timeserved in anything but could give many a so called tradesman a run for their money.

In my opion no one needs 4 years to learn a skill a good 2 years would be enough as I am sure many tradesmen would agree the 4 pluss years is just the companies way of getting a couple of good years work from you on the cheap.

Well hope they don't make them for jaguar , I remember I put it into get fixed 6 weeks later they were still changing this and that because sensor was saying that was the trouble , been cheaper just putting new engine in the car

8 months at my current employer.

They have an assessment at the end, that if they pass, they get a job. I'm basically helping train my own replacement.

If they don't pass the assessment, then they get offered another apprentice placement in another area.

I was a carpenter to trade and did my 4 years training and got all my papers , even now I am a projects manager , and have taught in colleges, there are new things coming out all the time , I have been fortunate to work all over the world , and have seen the best and worst of tradesmen , a lot of it has to do with the easy way to do something ie modern cordless tools , they cant work without them , a lot of things are pre made up for them and they are just fitters now , I served my time with a bespoke company , never built the same thing twice , yes its 2 years of learning then the next is 2 years of perfecting your trade , I can go any where with my bits of paper in the world and yes I have added to them , but they were my starting point

I am sure you do believe that but no major company will accept a trademan without a 4 year apprenticeship, whether it be an Electrician, Mechanic, Instruments etc, even the forces ensure proper training and once you have your 4 year apprenticeship it will take you at least a year to fully complete a SVQ if working for a large industry

My uncle owns a garage in Hamilton & he says there's no such thing as mechanics any more the term now is fitter, coz the cars CPU tells them what's wrong, what parts it needs, & all they need to do is fit them. He says he gives people apprentiships so he can get 4years cheap work coz they learn it quick once they're done he's "not" got a job for them then starts with a new few people. It is a bit scummy what he does but like he says you don't get rich by being nice or fair.
