interesting national anthem question...

Newcastle and Gateshead

how do you like flower of scotland played....

normally you have music thru the entire anthem... however when scotland play rugby at home... they only play music under it for the first verse... then let the crowd sing it for the 2nd verse...

so.... how do you like your?

I invariably turn the sound off for FOS.

Does the crowd just carry on singing even though the expectation is they'll stop after verse 1?

Of course, FOS was never intended to be played on the big pipes. They just don't do flattened 7th s.

while scotland is still part of the union there should only be one anthem played , all should stand and sing god save the queen then the game should be played ,

going to the calcutta cup in march , be fun to hear what the scots sing , if the want to sing flower of scotland i dont have too great a problem with that , but i wonder why they would want to sing about being a nation again when they had the chance and decided not to take it , but as the queen is the queen of not just england but of scotland also they should stand proud and sing god save the queen as subject of her majesty would

I also wonder how many NO voters in the Scotland crowd stand and sing this song, unbelievable same as the way they voted.

This song can only belong to proud scots who believe in the song.

To bring it back to the OP, I was at Murrayfield on Saturday and I can tell I get goose bumps singing, normally struggle to get the first few words out. The first time they stopped the band for the second verse was a bit strange but extremely atmospheric......

That link would not open, but then again it was the "Scotsman" newspaper

Scotland's National Anthem should be;

Caledonia

Music and Lyrics by Dougie MacLean

Published by Limetree Arts and Music (MCPS and PRS UK)

it is a simply heart warning song, with no attack on other countries, simply a feel good song

Dougie MacLean also wrote The Gael which for me is more of a goosebump piece of music and there is no lyrics to it unless you consider the drivel Clannad brought out years ago.

everyone should attend the Amber festival which is on every year around the end of October, Dougie Maclean organises and puts on many shows all around Dunkeld and Perthshire, some fantastic artists and you will hear all Dougies music, he puts a lot back into his community and its a fantastic time for all

As a very long time rugby supporter, may I add a few points??....Firstly, as one that can remember not so long ago that the ONLY anthem that was played at Murrayfield was God save the Queen, and it was hardly heard for the cacophony of boos from the majority of the crowd, to the embarrassment of many!, since the decision to adopt "the flower", at least the booing has stopped. Secondly...to suggest that because of a majority ..no! vote, at the recent political referendum, means that Scots should lose their right to classify themselves as a separate nation is the very attitude that has helped to swell the numbers of voters who support the SNP. Thirdly.....and to answer the original question, the musical arrangement at Murrayfield is not new, and has been used for a number of years, personally, I like it (though not a huge fan of 'the flower',despite having met its writer)I think that the second verse sung unaccompanied shows a degree of togetherness and support for the team when sung in time and in tune, a feat that very few crowds ....especially the Twickenham one...can manage to do when singing their Anthem. My only bug bear is the fact that the majority sing 'to be A nation again......when Roy Williamson wrote the song the words are'to be THE!!!!!!! nation again......please try and get it right people......

Can't stand Flower of Scotland.

Should be; Scotland The Brave

Highland Cathedral

Or

Cock of The North

Only way to listen to that dirge that's been unofficially adopted is to put in earplugs and block it out.

I'm 100% Scottish and as patriotic as the next man but Flower of Scotland is truly awful.

God Save The Queen is an offensive dirge! Meladdio up there would see why Scotland and Wales dont sing it if he ridded himself of his english entitlement. Also given the make up of the six nations thats a lot of boring national anthem being sung!

I wonder how many at that match singing Flower of Scotland actually voted against nationhood, but still had the nerve, hypocrisy and lack of shame to join in?

Let's hear it for those who made Scotland the only nation on earth to vote AGAINST self-determination.

Now, what was that song by the bard called again.....
