No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

Do you think a lot of humour gets lost when posting in the forums?

I think it does I've read loads of stuff and lol'd but sometimes I've misread whats been ment by a post or comment.

I've saw some histerical jokes and laughed then saw the op being ripped apart because someone hasn't saw the humour in which their post was intended.

Your thought?

I think so, but then again people look for the negative at times. They think it is the better position.

I actually think that because its written it lacks expression sometimes..its funnier when said face to face or spoken...same with everything really...I do feel the art of conversation is dying since the invention of texting/mobiles etc..

When written, there is no tone of voice, facial expressions etc... so a lot of things can be taken out of context or misread

I think its definately better for the jokes to be made in person..

Personally I think there are many people on the site who take it, what they read and themselves too seriously at times

Defo pink mist

Some folk on the forum need thicker skin

And some always think every post is a dig at them when everyone else can see it's not

Think sometimes it depends on what mood your in when you read certain posts and that goes for what replies you give ?

The whole problem is with the written word itself. Speaking face to face lets the other person see facial expressions and vocal intonation, emphasis and actual meaning. This means that in writing sarcasm, surrealism and various types of irony are completely lost on the reader if they are not too receptive or tuned in to sarcasm and irony and don't see the humour in the text itself.

I remember watching QI and it provided the answer by using ^ ^ as quotation marks around ^sarcasm^ or ^irony^, but of course this spoils it and makes sarcasm pretty bloody pointless.
