South Glasgow University Hospital campus is handed over

Scotland's largest hospital - the new £842m South Glasgow University Hospital - has been officially handed over ahead of a planned opening in May.

It hosts the 1,109-bed South Glasgow University Hospital for adults and 256-bed Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

The campus replaces the Royal Hospital for Sick Kids at Yorkhill, the Southern General Hospital, Western and Victoria Infirmaries and Mansionhouse Unit.

The campus was delivered under budget and ahead of schedule.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the design was a move away from the traditional ward-based model.

The health board's chief executive, Robert Calderwood, said: "With the exception of critical care, all of the patient areas in the adult hospital are single en-suite rooms and all bedrooms have a full-length floor-to-ceiling windows on the outside wall to increase natural daylight but also to give the patient the opportunity to see out with the clinical environment.

"In the children's hospital 80% of the 256 beds are singe, en-suite, with parents' accommodation in the area."

This looks like a totally amazing new hospital my children attend old yorkhill.

Sometimes felt like it was our second home

Looking forward to hopefully being only out patients visits though

That's great news. Its so important for recovering children to have their parents beside them. During my time at GOSH, while the care was excellent the parents accommodation was dormitories with bunk beds. No privacy, and in the basement far away from the wards. I'm sure its better now but it was impossible to rest and so depressing. Parents of sick children need TLC too to be able to cope with such a difficult situation. These improvements sound amazing.

They definitely do more privacy for people also

Will be great if they increase staffing levels in the wards... but tbh I dont relish the thought of nursing vulnerable patients in single rooms atm my ward has 6 bedded bays nd we find it difficult to keep an eye on those patients as the place can kick off at any time nd we get called to other rooms....just my opinion nd most of the nurses I know nd work with

no nursing staff are the last to know the porters and cleaners are booked for overtime weeks if not months in advance sometimes

The new fast link transport system will be up and running soon which goes direct from city centre to the suffering general and there's a few multi story carparks on site

Controlled/ resident parking at £1.00 a week has turned out to be the best thing for residents in many areas.

I think there is a 4 hour maximum stay though.
