I watched this program on TV last night and some of the stuff that was going on in their Chinese manufacturing place was pretty shocking!

My point is are Apple any different from any other big company who exploit cheep labour?

And

Would it put you off buying an Apple product?

All phone companies are the same, in fact, some many companies in general are the same so it really isn't just Apple. Nike have been at it, everything you buy from Primark too. Edinburgh Woollen Mill product were found amongst the products in the factory that was destroyed (in Pakistan I think it was). They've obviously chosen Apple to try and take them down a peg or two but they're all at it.

Thats the reason these companies can provide such high volumes of products at a price where people will buy them and they can still make huge profits.

Not saying it's right or proper, just that it's rife in big business. Our consumer-led lifestyles in the west puts up blinkers to the way in which these products are made. We all know, or at least have an inking, that it goes on but our thirst for the latest gadgets and clothes means we're willing to turn a bling eye.

Of course, the way these companies have these things made means there will be three or four companies between them and the actual manufacturing so it gives them some element of protection from these accusations. The t-shirts sold by Nicola Sturgeon on her recent tour were shown to be made in sweatshops so no one is really immune from it.

Somewhere down the line in business there's always someone being exploited to a greater or lesser degree. it all comes down to do you feel bad enough about it to withdraw your support for the company concerned

No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

No when my son was younger and worked for a well know burger joint he was often overlooked for overtime.

When he asked to work his day off he was told no while a polish guy who worked with him got to work all his days off.

My son eventually questioned his manager about it and he was told it was because the polish guy was only earning half what my son was so it made more sense to have him in on his day off rather than paying double to my son.

To answer my own question! No it wouldn't put me off buying an Apple product!

I worked for two manufacturing company's in Scotland one of which went to the Far East and the other to Eastern Europe!

Although I was gutted at the time it lead to a change of career for the better! We can't compete with these countries for labour costs and the only way these countries improve human rights is if they are more prosperous!

I did not think anything there was too bad.

my company h's a factory in China they sleep on the floor six days of the week and are worked much harder than the workers last night

the young ppl are not standing for it the older ones are still scared they will be carted of and never seen again.

I'm sure in a few years it will be much better there. My company really struggles to hold on to workers because the way they treat them

I've knew about all that stuff way before its on the telly the only bit of it that annoys me is apple are making this stuff cheap as chips & charging a fortune, scummy bastards. & have u seen the size of china! It's over populated & not enough work so it's a wage to them, If Scotland keeps goin the way it's goin we'll all be in exactly the same posisition

Yep too right. Use myself as an example at the moment, I only wish I was working as little as these apple workers. A chef in December in a new restaurant where 2 other chefs failed to start means I'm working 7 days a week all day till late at night to train new guys and deliver service and keep. Means I in reality earn less than min wage at the moment but not a lot of choice, need to get the job done. Roll on Xmas day to get a day off.

edinburgh

would make me think twice about purchasing a product.

As many people has mentioned here, cheap labour all over and plenty of explotation.

We all have to deal with first world problems, where others have to make life and death decisions.

I understand everyone wants everything as cheap as possible, and someone has to be at the bottom. I find it appalling when people take things for granted without seeing the cost to humanity.

I have heard the argument that if we dont buy product X, then these people will have NO job. But if the message gets across the product X sales have dropped because of a clear connection from consumer awareness .. that encourages the company to better their standard.

How many of the people that bitch and moan their jobs are going to cheap sources in Europe, couldn't give a shit when they exploit cheap labour so they can have their shiny toys.

In this day and age, it speaks a lot about us when their are so many poor people in dire situations.

If you accept apple products and how they treat their staff, then the next time you don't get a pay rise or you get a pay cut then you only have yourself to blame, there is far too much of this "im all right jack" going on in the world
