"SCOTTISH football could begin moves to permit the sale of alcohol inside stadiums after the chief executive of the Scottish Football Association admitted that talks with Police Scotland have already taken place.

Initial proposals include selling only low-alcohol lager and cider and maintaining a ban on spirits.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan said yesterday: “The sale of alcohol at grounds has been on the agenda within our Professional Game Board for a number of months now. We’ve had discussions internally and with Police Scotland."

Moving with the times or a recipe for disaster,

Hope they think long and hard about consequences . Figures for trouble have mainly been going down don't want them to increase again especially with an old firm game approaching .

The thing is, majority of fans are in the pub prior to the games anyway.

Let's wait and see what happens at the Old Firm Cup game coming up.

These two have been separated for the past 2-3 seasons whenever they are back in the same division and playing each other regularly again will determine the results of any due diligence the Police and SFA are doing

Would be interesting to find out how it works in Manchester or Liverpool when there Derby games are on . While since I was there alcohol on sale in grounds in plastic pint cups never seemed to cause any major problems .

Lets be honest, it won't make much difference!! Before the game people are in the pubs or drinking on the bus if its an away day! The sale of alchohol in the grounds will be for warm overpriced beer!! So not much to get excited about!!

Illegal to drink alcohol in a bus

It does happen I know but if stopped you get a paltry fine

The driver is also fined and the bus company can lose its operators licence

I remember when I drive the supporters buses we used to get stopped and searched just outside Aberdeen. Then at full time a heavy Police escort from Pittodrie to the Motorway for fast evacuation of the sheep farm

I prefer the hot choc to a tepid pint anyway.

Falkirk

It's never been banned at the rugby but I'm not convinced by the argument for bringing it back. It only takes a minority to ruin it for the majority

As a fan who regularly frequents St mirren games home and away a don't see what harm it would do selling alcohol in stadiums but if they agree to it ! Surly it must be across the board and not police scotland/ spfl picking and choosing when appropriate?? Could also be an extra income to a clubs yearly intake.

Excellent news, although we should not have needed the boxing/snooker promoter Barry Hearn to come out and chastise us for it in order for the SFA got their finger out their arses and lobby the government on it, what exactly do we pay these beaks at the SFA millions each year to do?

I stopped going to the games a few years back as I was fed up of sitting in the freezing cauld with my boaby shrivelled up like a wee pile of buttons watching utter garbage on the park. If they can bring back pints at the game and switch to summer footy I know I would go back and I'm sure others would too.

I don't think safety is an issue now as alcohol was banned at the height of the dressers/casuals phenomenon it exists only in a much diluted form now. It is up to fans to be responsible and to police themselves, and where they can't - well clubs are already employing dozens of strong-handed and overbearing stewards anyway who are earning their wage by taking kids flags off them and ejecting them for standing on the seats at the moment, make them earn their wage having to actually control a buoyant crowd.

People don't like getting ripped off in ticket prices but they don't mind splashing the cash when it comes to alcohol, so it would allow clubs to lower the price at the gate, get more folk in, on the basis of being able to make it back and more on alcohol.

Pros - cheaper tickets, fuller stadiums, better atmosphere, increased revenue, better players, better on-field product, better overall fan experience, better commercial sponsorship & tv deals.

Cons - chance of increase in antisocial behaviour

It's a no-brainer for me.

B/f manages to get a few pints at the football. That's junior football though so don't know if the law is different there.

I really don't want drink back at football matches.

Who cant go 90 minutes with out a drink ??? what is the pleasure of standing in the cold with a drink and having to use a loo that smells like a dragoons breathe !!!

If you are in the stand people up and down going for extra toilet breaks , it is bad enough going for pies !!!

rant over !!!! no to drink being sold and spilt over me at football games thank you very much !!!!

Lets be honest football is brutal to watch. Dosnt matter who you support. Think a few drink would help you cope with the junk you need to watch. Scottish football is dying if it get more people through the turnstiles the better More singing. Only trouble I see is Auld firm games if they happen again ??
