a wee word of warning

lanarkshire

just a wee caution to anyone with personalised number plates. Both mr and mrs bobs have them and there is now a very active policy from our friendly constabulary to clamp down on 'misrepresented' plates. Mr got a caution and warning to change his but poor mrs got no such leniency and an instant £60 fine even tho they are very close to legal and been used for over 6yrs!! The dvla make huge amounts of money selling these cherished plates knowing people will adjust them slightly then to request a police purge on them smacks of double standards. Your thoughts??

Ive been cautioned myself.

Never mind the DVLA but the bloody local polis allow Lanarkshire to be overrun with drug dealers and Buckfast neds...that seem OK to them but not a misplaced letter on a car plate.

so the license plate has been altered?

think if thats the case then a warning would be more than deserved, a fine should mabye only be issued if the warning was ignored.

if its the law to have it a certain way then thats that. We wouldnt change a 30mph road to a 40mph off our own backs...? xx

( not having a go, just my 2p )

oh absolutely. We cant pick and choose which laws we abide by and which we dont but surely a wee warning and word of caution would work better and avoid bad feeling towards the police as opposed to an instant 60quid fine. Also speed limits are designed with safety in mind and there is nothing at fault safety wise in a number plate. Surely any member of the 'force' is literate enough to work out some numbers and letters in whatever combination. Just a wee rant as we are a few quid down tehe and would never have a go at mr and mrs plod. Honest guv lol

at time of offence the police did say that they would take a picture and send to dvla. Do understand the clamp down as looking around .it was getting ridiculous with plates. My own where really bad and were designed to look german but i got a warning but poor mrs got a fine. She should really be wearing the low cut tops and short skirts just in case of these situations and also mention fab as i know of a few force members tehe

sadly a lot of that is down to the boy/car racers who were buying such plates and making letters/numbers bigger/smaller and adjusting to make it say their name/logo. In the past you would get warning and told to bring car to police station within 7 days to show you have altered.

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

Have to say that it has long amazed me at the alterations some people get away with!

However, considering the amount of obvious and serious crimes which are happening all around us, I do think that it's cheap and lazy policing.

Any chance of them going out and actually patrolling the roads and maybe doing something about these pillocks wandering down the middle and outside lanes, causing frustration and annoyance behind them? And they're not boy racers but often decent, middle-aged, 'pillars' of their communities, who seem to think that their civil liberties are above everybody else's!!

Sorry, rant over!

THE GREAT POLICE OFFICER

Well, Mr. Public, it seems you've figured me out. I seem to fit neatly into the category where you've placed me.

I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified, grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true. I can never figure you out.

From birth you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman, then you're shocked when they identify with my traditional enemy, the criminal!

You accuse me of coddling criminals: until I catch your kids doing wrong.

You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer for having one cup. You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of disrupting my meals with your troubles.

You raise hell with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws...but you've never gotten a single ticket you deserve.

You shout "foul" if you observe me driving fast to a call, but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond to your complaint.

You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it police brutality if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix, yet your always willing give me pointers on the law.

You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye.

You yell something's got to be done to fight crime, but you can't be bothered to get involved.

You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back of the patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many hours overtime looking for your lost daughter.

So, Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family, or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies.

Yes, Mr. Public, it's me...the lousy cop!

The author of this article was an American Police Officer. He was killed in the line of duty two months after writing the article.....

Yes there are some wankers that are Police but its true of every job. Yes there are some obscure laws such as number plates being altered that many people wont know about, however discretion seems to have been taken away from them. Its all about performance now a warning does not count in the old figures game. I think that the Police are now run as businesses and not services. Its the politicians that have done this!!

Thats my piece but if i get caught without my seatbelt i know im going to get a fine...whos at fault?

I used to work at a Fiscals office and this is just my observation.

sorry but when one buys a number late (personal or otherwise) it is manufactured and supplied in a condition that is LEGAL, that is how its meant to stay.

How would folk feel if the where involved in a hit and run where the only thing witnesses got was the number plate ....and it had been ALTERED ...makeing the driver virtualy untraceable .

Sorry if you alter a number plate you deserve to be fined .........your breaking the LAW!!

An altered number plate is easier to remember tham a legal one.

CL 1T / CL1T.

D44 EY / D44EY

J4 NEY / J4NEY

So would hardly say they were unreadable.

My own son has just been fined the same £60 for the spacing which was just a few millimetres shot of the legal but then again he is young and its him and every other young drivers fault that it is happening as being young makes you a boy racer.

If its illegal its illegal for all not just one group.

trying not to get heated, but this is close to my heart,

the whole drug dealers / petty crime. How would you suggest they deal with them? the police dont have the time or resources to camp outside these peoples houses to get enough evidence in order to get them more than a slap on the wrist.

is that the fault of the police? no, its the judicial system that we have and the 'its not happening to me' attititude that so many people have in this country.

Do you report these drug dealers to the police when you see them selling to people? why not? it would be a record of the potential crime there committing?

thats impossible for the boy racers to meet at the water sports car parks at night as they are closed at night due to the pervs and doggers and i can assure you all the doggers on here that frequent the park will vouch for that.dont know where you get your info from.

Agree with your sentiments. A warning and a requirement to present the proper plates at the local station should be sufficient.

Dear SWEETFA

It would seem that you live in what i would call "Cloud Cuckoo Land"

There is nothing worse than an uneducated rant.

The cop on the street is not out to deal with drug dealers. There are specialist units that deal with drug dealers, (drugs squad) they gather evidence and carry out covert surveillance etc. The cop that works on the street deals with what he comes across and what he is sent to, he does not sit outside a suspected dealers house all day waiting to deal with your preferred choice of criminal!!

As your obviously on the Internet there is a wealth of information on it...read it! Its seems that that wee poem type thing struck a nerve with you....chip on your shoulder?

Why would i also get a backhander???

unfortunately for you guys and from a legal stance the police are not obliged to give out warnings, the way the law is read: ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law.

a debate may ensue whether that is right or wrong and i cant answer for personal opinion, it is just a fact.

I have a personilsed number plate on my car, and like all others have to abide by the terms & conditions of the sale of said number. Before the DVLA sell a number you have listen and agree that you will not change the layout of the legal spacing and size.

Also as an MOT tester and a supplier of number plates we are being instructed by said authoritive body to fail or refuse to test any vehicle whose registration plate does not comply with the regulations. (All fonts have to be uniform in size and width, and equally spaced with double apacing between the 1st and 2nd set of prefix. so FAB 1E cannot be FAB1E)It is now also a legal requirement for suppliers of registration plates to place their identification number on all plates made so that not only can the driver be fined so can the issuer of said illegal plate. Hence why you'll se all these dodgy companies have the wording SHOW PLATES on their sites etc whan they sell them to you.

The law is the law its as aimple as that, if you break it you get your fingers wrapped whether it be for buckfast, nedism, drug offences or trivial maters.
