jist watching a documentary on BBC iplayer about prostitution in Britain, folk on it are really open n honest about it too which is a real eye opener

I'm sure we all know at least one person who's done webcam work or escort work at least one point in life?

Views? Opinions?

At the end of the day it's one of the oldest professions going

If it works for you then who cares what anyone thinks, it's been around for centuries and will be for centuries to come.

There's a book called call me Elizabeth.... Great read about a woman who turned to escorting to make a living.

I think there are many issues. Many of the women in the UK have been trafficked, they are not prostitutes they are sex trade victims !!!

Just because they are not from abroad does not mean they have not been trafficked from other parts of the uk.

Some women are working through either drug additiction on financial problems so to say it is harmless is folly.

I think it should be made legal. Health insurance with regular checks, lower age limits, safe, clean, health & safety assessed working environment.

Better for the ladies/men & customers.

Then they can pay tax like everyone else.

I think it's a valid job, some people don't want a relationship but they do need sex, nothing wrong with a consensual business transaction between adults.

The issue is when force is used or youngsters end up going into prostitution.

Just my opinion

Personally I think the law makes it more dangerous for girls (or men) working as two girls working together for safety classes it as a brothel and then becomes illegal

Working alone = more dangerous & legal

Working together = more safe but illegal

It's not illegal for someone to charge another for sex

I agree, it should be legalised and licenced and proper support put in place for the sex workers.

Not sure I agree with calls to make buying sex illegal - apparently 10% or so of men have bought sex at one time or another so you would criminalise a large section of society.

That is exactly the issue and the HARM.

Young girls & boys being forced into this or students forced to do this to pay tuition fees or support themselves whilst studying.

If it is someone who has thought it through and simply enjoys it and at the same time gets paid then that is a completely different story but sadly there are far too many youngsters being forced into this either to pay there way in life or to give someone else luxuries

Sorry meant legalise & Raise age limits e.g vetted and licensed workers & establishments and minimum age of say 25, by which time the risk of students or young vulnerable people falling into it has reduced.

Certainly don't agree with youngsters being involved or anyone being forced into anything, that's the opposite of what I'd hope legalising & licensing would achieve. I feel very strongly that it's a valid and important job and service and being supported in it may help make it safer for all those involved (workers & customers).

Appreciate everyone has different views.

Agree with above points - it is about trying to make a system which protects vulnerable people as much as possible but also recognises the reality that prostitution has always, and probably will always, go on in some form.

Consensual sex involving a financial transaction is, of course, completely harmless and is no business of the state - none!

Sex trafficking involves serious crimes such as slavery, kidnapping and multiple rape - all crimes which can - and should - be dealt with by the police .... yet in the last ten years, despite this problem being hardly a secret, our police forces have obtained zero convictions for this heinous activity, and only one recently by the new unitary police force. A pretty damning indictment of the abilities of our senior police officers, without doubt.

Then we have the women who feel obliged to sell their bodies because of financial necessity .... an indictment of the failure of our society to provide enough employment with a living wage, or the financial stress placed upon students. Still consensual, even if the choices are limited.

Those with least choice are the drug-addicted street hookers with a chaotic lifestyle but, sad though their situation undoubtedly is, the law should not get involved. If working girls are controlled by pimps, that is a different matter which can be dealt with under existing laws, as can the nuisance caused by kerb crawling.

Edinburgh's policy of acceptance and acquiescence of regulated saunas worked very well until that awful fascist and self-publicist Stephen House decided to upset the apple cart and overturn the wishes of the community and its elected councillors with his sauna raids.

One can only hope that those who argue for this country to follow the disastrous Swedish experiment will desist from wilfully deceiving the public by conflating the activities of a "belle de jour" with the vile trade of sex slavery.

I think it's only illegal because the goverment cant justify taxing people for it so they can't make a profit so it's illegal, personnaly I don't think there's anythin wrong with it, if a had a huge knob a would sell maself no shame

I stay in glasgows east end and im regualy propositioned even when with a female. Drug fuelled girls with pimp in bus stop or car cops drive by doing nowt legalise it and takes those poor girls off the street and whatever crazy life they being forced to live

Brothel running is also illegal but that causes problems for ladies who want to work together in a premises for safety.

Licencing would likely not solve the problem of street prostitution and exploitation but might make it more manageable.

There are of course some people who regard prostitution as immoral and exploitative whatever the arrangement and because it is a largely hidden activity there is not much solid data on what is going on. Hence both sides of argument can quote probably unreliable statistics to support their case.

Would be interested to hear update of what has happened in Sweden - most news I have seen suggests it has lowered rates of prostitution but I do not know if this is true or just spun from one particular angle.

From the evidence I have heard on radio programmes tackling this subject, escorts in Sweden feel much less safe now and are reporting an increase in violence against them.

But let's not allow such irrelevant matters to derail the crusade of the likes of Fiona McTaggart MP and Rhoda Grant MSP. Eejits!

I like that approach! I was out recently with four boys, they all wanted to visit lapdancing, I hate lapdancing and sat nursing my beer chasing the girls away, they spent collectively £300 in an hour. We then went to a club and I pulled. Had to pay the young lady £20 in petrol money the next day to take me home but thats far better value!!
