Labour in meltdown

Sometimes, abusers do face a day of reckoning.....

"The Labour Party in Scotland would face political annihilation if there was a general election tomorrow, according to a poll commissioned by STV.

The Ipsos Mori survey shows Labour would poll 23% of the Scottish vote, leaving them with just four seats in Scotland.

In comparison, support for the SNP has surged to 52%, giving them a projected 54 seats at Westminster. The Liberal Democrats would have one and the Conservative party would be left without any Scottish MPs.

Another poll by YouGov for the Times, released later on Thursday, put Scottish Labour four points higher on 27%, a result they calculated would give the party ten seats.

The full breakdown of STV's Ipsos Mori poll is SNP 52%, Scottish Labour 23%, Scottish Conservatives 10%, Scottish Liberal Democrats 6%, Scottish Green Party 6%, Ukip 2% and 1% support for others."

Such a shame they deserted the principles of Keir Hardie and turned into a party of self-serving and self-enriching political gangsters (with, in their Strathclyde & Lanarkshire heartlands, links to proper criminal gangsters!)

I think Labour is in transition, I was never a big Johhan Lamont fan !!!

I am sure Jim Murphy will sort the party out.

I would still prefer to vote Labour than a party that does not allow descent from the ranks !!!

The only person to be a SNP member that critised the party was a councillor that resigned because gay marriage was not in the manifesto but became law.

They quickly rounded on him and the cyber nats and trolls attached him with military efficiency !!!!

For all Labours faults they still allow their party free speech

So you think spud Murphy has what it takes?

And that the only SNP member to offer criticism of the party was one councillor?

And that Scottish labour's (MP's and MSP's) 100% support of the London policy on independence - for which they are now, rightly, paying a very high price... shows that dissent is encouraged? Strange that not even one of them came out in favour of independence, is it not?

What is the atmosphere like for you and _nny on your planet? It must be pretty constricting, being absorbed by the labour borg.

At the Westminster vote on alterations to the bedroom tax all 40 Scottish Labour MP.s turn up, out of the six SNP MP'S two turned up, one booked the wrong time of flight and the others did not even bother making an excuse.

Every country in the world is suffering the effects of austerity not just the UK. I do not agree with the way the austerity cuts are imposed and believe there are better ways through taxing companies to sort it.

Why under the SNP would austerity just vanish !!!!!

"I think it is a disaster for democracy - we are now in a one party state."

Just as the resurrection in participation in the democratic process and the placing of constitutional change has brought a great bonus to the citizens of the other three nations within the UK, the short term effect of that "one party state" as you put it, or the will of the people as it is in fact, will also deliver independence - which will in turn lead to the emergence of new parties and a more diverse political landscape.

The primary objective of the SNP is to achieve independence and thereafter to disband.

Only the unionist parties prefer a situation of "no change" - but the Scots have smashed into their comfortable private club, shaken their trough and re-written the rules.... with more to come in due course.

Well they all shared the same platform and gave their fellow travellers in BT such wonderful support and praise.

Was it not heartening to see such fellowship among the disparate troughers when their common interest (their place on the westmidden gravy train) was threatened. Wunderbar!

There's a huge irony about the SNP's call for local people to be making the decisions that affect them rather than a distant parliament when they are doing the exact opposite in Scotland. They are imposing their will on local authorities and making a mockery of the idea of local government.

"The objectives of all our politicians should centre on the best interests of all the UK people."

I'm not sure about this - I think that concerns and priorities are often more local. I remember listening to a Labour Councillor years ago at a funding committee in Glasgow, he was looking for funding for a project in his ward, and his opening gambit was, 'You know me, I don't ask for much...' I hated him - he was up against SNP councillors who fought tooth and nail for their constituents - they creamed him - and not in a good way!

Oh and the 4 years of SNP "informal coalition" with the Scottish Conservative party didn't happen?

"Is Mr Salmond perhaps forgetting that he and his SNP colleagues worked “hand-in-glove, shoulder-to-shoulder” with Annabel Goldie and her Scottish Conservative Party in an informal coalition that lasted from 2007 to 2011?

Even if Conservative MPs and MSPs really were the monstrous villains portrayed by Scottish Nationalists and their leftist comrades, this would preclude absolutely nothing. Were Churchill and Roosevelt wrong to work “hand-in-glove, shoulder-to-shoulder” with Joseph Stalin?"

Don't let facts get in the way of a good whine.

Or how about 1974 when the 11 SNP MP's opened the door to 18 years of Tory government?

"We don't do Tories" sayeth the forgetful Nat.

This is about Labour not about the snp who have made massive gains while labour will effectively be wiped off the political map within 2 years.

labour wont even release membership figures but given ballots printed were less than 5000 circa as an indication of just how depleted they are.

I fear for Scotland. I really do.

I look at the political choice laid before me and shudder.

All 4 major parties have major defects. They are All as bad as each other - filled to the top of the trough with self serving 'monkeys' who's only though is "what's in it for me".

Hope over fear - neither puts food on the table or pays the bills.

"Scottish Nationalists and their leftist comrades" .... interesting comment that the labour activists do not even see themselves as being leftist.

Labour activist? Well, the evidence for that comes in the revealing words: "11 SNP MP's opened the door to 18 years of Tory government" Ha, ha, very good! The poor deluded souls are still clinging to this treasured labour lie (and there is no shortage of them in the labour baggage cart.

I would suggest that anyone of balanced and objective outlook could not fail to conclude that the disastrous labour government of that time (last three words being superfluous - name a labour government in the last 50 years which has not left a legacy of debt and disaster) brought upon themselves the vote of no confidence which triggered the election.

And it is equally obvious and self-explanatory that the electorate decided, in voting for 18 years of tory administrations, that they had no confidence in labour. If labour had offered a credible alternative, there would not have been 18 years of tory rule.

Oops! A Who was it said, " Don't let facts get in the way of a good whine."

Labour are a sorry bunch. If they hadn't caused so much damage to this country and its people over the past 50 years, you could almost feel sorry for the shameless scoundrels.

But, as they will find out at the next GE, there will be little forgiveness for the parcel o'rogues party.

There was a good reason they were called Maggie Thatchers lap dogs.

You can't hide the fact that you opened the door for her.

Then you had a nice lovey dovey "informal coalition" with the Scottish Tories for 4 years.

Or is that another event to be written out of the history books?

Like "Once in a generation referendum".

Democracy our way or no way..

"A fairer more equal Scotland"

So explain how you can find £25 million for an uneconomic future scottish spaceport yet only £1/2 million to help food banks.

Or the nice bit of spin today where the commonwealth games came in under budget by £25 million, when it actually it was "contingency funds" that was given to them when they overspent the budget? Hardly the same.

80 years of planning, 7 years of government, 2 years of campaigning. The choice of date, expansion of the franchise and still you lost.

If labour falls over, Scotland will become a single party state - not something to be taken lightly. Especially when the death of corroboration is being pushed through.

State police force. State watchers for our kids. Single source evidence.

I look forward to the purge of the unbelievers and naysayers. (Not)

When do you form the braveheart brigades to purge the ballot boxes and nation of "undesirables".

Have you started printing the "Wee blue book" for distribution to all children in the single state sector? Or the posters "Become a government informer - Prizes to be won!"

There is a simple explanation for the febrile, nervous mood in the Labour party right now. And it doesn’t involve secret plots, feuding factions or vindictive Tory media. It involves The Great Escape. Remember the final reel? Well, Ed Miliband’s tunnel has come up short.

A quick recap in case you last saw the film on Boxing Day 20 years ago. The allied POWs have been digging for months. It has all been carefully worked out but it hasn’t been easy – there was that moment when the Nazi commandant found one of the tunnels, and the episode when Ives lost his nerve and tried to climb the barbed wire. But for the most part everyone has kept calm, stuck with the programme and now the moment has arrived. The tunnel is ready. It goes from under the prisoners’ barracks, beneath the camp fortifications and into the woods, from where the escapees can make a break for it.

Only there’s a problem. The calculations were wrong. The tunnel is 20 feet too short. It doesn’t come out in the woods, it comes out in the open well within view of the camp lights and the sentries. The prisoners can’t postpone the escape because their forged documents have that day’s date on them. It’s now or never. The choice is back to Stalag Luft III or a desperate dash for the woods, exposed to the enemy, with no cover and every chance of being mown down by machine gun fire.

And that’s where Labour are now. There are MPs who have long harboured doubts about Ed Miliband’s capabilities as a leader. They have questioned his policy choices (from left and right angles) and fretted about his lacklustre performances on stage and in the TV studios. But most of them could at least believe in the tunnel – the narrow passage to Downing Street, buttressed by voters who had abandoned the Liberal Democrats and carved through Tory-held marginal terrain where David Cameron’s vote is hollowed out by defections to Ukip.

It was never a very inspiring proposition, burrowing surreptitiously beneath public opinion; sneaking out of opposition with forged papers. Miliband’s aides always denied that their strategy relied on the tunnel. The preferred option was to march boldly to power, all guns blazing, beneath inspirational slogans of national renewal.

Ed Miliband shakes hands with a giant pink bear.

Grin and bear it: Miliband has brushed aside complaints about his leadership.

But, as opinion polls narrowed, the consolation was that the tunnel would still get them there in the end. Except it’s too short. Some of the Lib Dem switchers are drifting off to the Greens, or Ukip or who-knows-where. Some of the voters who backed the party in 2010, the diehard core that was meant to lay a 29-point concrete floor beneath Labour’s support, look less than solid. And, in Scotland it feels as if the ceiling is about to cave in.

Then there are Miliband’s personal ratings. Candidates and activists report a hardening of attitudes on the doorstep since May’s local and European elections. Before, people would complain that they didn’t know what to make of the Labour leader; he wasn’t a candidate they could get a purchase on and that made them wary. Now, I’m told, the mood has hardened. The benefit of the doubt is being withdrawn; contempt fills the gap.

Yet Labour MPs also know there is no simple mechanism for changing the leader, no obvious replacement and every reason to think that a messy effort at regicide would make the whole situation much worse. As one backbencher put it to me when I asked about talk of delegations or letters to persuade Miliband to stand aside: “Lots of us have thought about it at some point but then you war-game it through and realise it can’t work.” Reports of plots and pacts between shadow cabinet ministers are overblown – old rumour recast as news – but they express a real darkening of the mood.

Miliband’s leadership and potential successors are the inevitable topic of conversation whenever Labour folk gather in one place. While MPs know the right thing to do is “shut up, get back into the trenches, hold the line” (as one shadow cabinet minister pithily puts it) they can’t help thinking about life after Ed.

And, as one frontbencher explained to me recently, once you start thinking about it, the logical next step is to start organising for it because, if you know someone you definitely don’t think should be the next leader is preparing to run – yes, they’re talking about you, Andy Burnham – it makes sense to get active on behalf of someone else. Or at least to start considering who that someone else should be and contingency planning for the race.

But there’s a general election in just six months. And it’s an election Labour – ahead in most polls – could still feasibly win (or at least emerge with the most seats in a hung parliament).

So it’s the middle of the night. The party is crammed into one end of the tunnel, the documents are ready and the date is set. Escape from opposition is possible and this is the only way out. No turning back now.

But the tunnel is too short. They were supposed to be in the woods but the tree line is a full 20 feet away. That’s 20 long feet in the glaring spotlight, with heavily armed guards all around and the only plan left is a mad dash for it; every man for himself; try not to get killed; hopefully see you on the other side. No wonder they’re scared.

Guardian summed it up ever so well

Oh, the delicious irony of those comments, coming from an entrenched supporter of the labour party.

The new labour conspiracy gave this country the most neo-fascistic, controlling, anti-democratic destroyer of the rights of the individual (wartime apart) since the dictatorship of Oliver Cromwell.

There are many who voted yes who have concerns about some recent legislation at Holyrood (most of it down to a justice minister of poor judgement) and bad policy at the top of the police force and in the procurator's office, but to talk of a "purge of the unbelievers and naysayers" or "braveheart brigades to purge the ballot boxes and nation of undesirables" (ballot rigging is actually a labour favourite!, or the comments about wee blue book and government informers....... what can one say? Bonkers, just bonkers.

And then you get a comment from _nny suggesting that those who decided to vote YES were fooled.....

Is it any wonder that all the artistic events at the festival with an independence theme were full of performers and writers who were brought up in labour households and formerly voted that way, but who will never again vote for them and have nothing but contempt for their former party, and shame and sadness at the depths to which it has sunk.

As one former labour MP campaigning for independence said to me when I reminded him of his old party's sins against Scotland, including the disgusting and anti-democratic 40% fix: "Sometimes it takes time to acquire enlightenment. At least I'm on the right path now."

First and foremost I am not an "entrenched supporter" of the labour party. I have never been a card carrying member of the labour party.

I support pluralist democracy. You obviously don't. It's our way or no way.

What I am trying to do is point out that we currently stand on the brink of becoming a single party state.

The current scottish government seems to have a centralising agenda which is at odds with its "Fairer, more equal Scotland" agenda.

There were and still are plenty of Scots who called those who wanted to remain in the union - traitors, quislings, Uncle jocks etc. Some went as far as proposing that on independence no voters should "fuck off to their beloved England".

The legacy of the referendum is a scotland divided.

I find that quite sad.

The legacy is a scotland more enthralled in politics than its ever been.

Labour had the chance to break from london and have a proper mandate for scotland. Lamont resigned because she didnt like westmonster dictating policy, eh hello thats what you campained for quite ironic.

Manchester and other cities in england will follow the scots to seek whats best for them not those in london.

The referendum a setback in name only if your honest scotland will gain independence in out lifetime.

What is emphatically true is that Labour is finished as a branch spin off from london.

Independence would see a proper scottish labour at present its a london spin off with 5000 cira members.

Embrace the political change as all other pro indy parties are then choose a party to represent your best interests.

When murphy takes leadership that will be the best thing ever for the snp as it will be the final nail in coffin for the red tories.

The Labour party are an absoulte shambles and I have no sympathy for them at all. They took their power in Scotland for granted and were tainted with corruption. It's all coming home to roost for them now.

In saying all that though the SNP are possibly the most opressive party we've seen in Scotland and the (deliberate?) faiulre of those who are pro-indy or pro SNP to see the lies and control freakery from them is pretty breathtaking. Will this change now that Salmond has gone? Time will tell.

I've got nothing in particular against the SNP - I just think that any party in power needs a strong opposition - it is generally bad for democracy when there is only a single dominant party - this point of view has nothing to do with Scottish Independence.

Not ridiculous at all. Pointing out that the post isn't comparing like with like.

eg Murphy and Sarwar's claims include the cost of travel between their constituencies in/ nr Glasgow and the workplace in London. Eck's travel to work is paid for under 'official travel' (the FM's official car).

another oil feild starts production in Scotland this week, producing 18,000 barrels per day. yes we have been shafted

Oil production has started at the major Golden Eagle development in the UK North Sea, according to operators Nexen Petroleum UK.

The development currently has two wells with the potential to produce about 18,000 barrels of oil per day.

Eventually 15 production wells and six water injection wells will be drilled.

The Golden Eagle Area Development (GEAD) is expected to reach peak production of about 70,000 barrels per day in 2015.

The project, which includes the Golden Eagle, Peregrine and Solitaire fields, lies about 70km (44 miles) north-east of Aberdeen.

Nexen, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese offshore oil producer CNOOC, has 36.54% interest in the development.

The remaining interests are held by Maersk Oil North Sea UK (31.56%), Suncor Energy UK (26.69%) and Edinburgh oil and Gas (5.21%).

"..........

Thousand commute from scotland to london and vice versa daily that argument laughable.

Really?

Thousands?

Daily?"

A GROWING number of people are opting to move to Edinburgh and commute to London for work.

Property experts say the “super-commuters” are attracted by large period homes, quality of life, good schools and value for money.

Estate agents Savills said in its autumn report on Scotland’s prime residential property market that the number of sellers based in England searching for houses in Scotland had more than doubled in the past year.

Andrew Perratt, head of Savills residential property, said a growing gulf in property prices between London and Scotland was the biggest factor driving the trend.

He said: “As the temperature of London’s prime property market soars, the yawning gap between London and Scotland has never been greater.

“This is making the move north a sensible option for an increasing number of people.

“There is a real rise in the number of super-commuters – those buyers currently living in London but moving to Edinburgh or Glasgow in order to take advantage of good schools, larger accommodation and value for money.”

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics, published earlier this week, show London properties recorded the largest year-on-year price rise in July – almost ten per cent – while prices in Scotland dropped by two per cent.

A typical house in London is now worth £438,000, while the average price in Scotland is £182,000.

Even in some of Scotland’s most expensive residential areas, house prices are well below those in London.

Savills said buyers in the London suburb of Fulham would pay more than three times more per square foot than they would in a similar area of Edinburgh.

Prospective house purchasers with a budget of between £500,000 and £750,000 could expect to find a detached house in the EH10 postcode area, covering Morningside and Bruntsfield, for around £361 per square foot compared with a two-bedroomed flat in London’s SW6 postcode area which would command a price of around £1151 per square foot.

Mr Perratt said air travel between Scotland and the south of England was often cheaper than commuting by train.

The Savills report also noted that some of those who bought a larger property in Scotland often used their equity to reduce the size of their mortgages.

Almost 75 per cent of prime property transactions in Scotland take place in the three market hubs of Edinburgh, Aberdeenshire and Greater Glasgow, though Tayside and Stirlingshire are now showing signs of increasing interest, thanks partly to the strength of the Edinburgh market.

Now that I have sobered up I do remember that AS pocketed two salarys , one from Westminster and one from the Scottish govn even though he said he would not do so.

He was constantly asked about his two wages and pensions so it is not only mp's from labour and the tories that have had there noses in the trough !!!!

How many snp members turned up to alter the bedroom tax at Westminster ??? Two out of six, one even booked the wrong time of flight and the others could not even be bothered to offer an excuse !!!!

The SNP brought in measures to counter act the bedroom tax ( which they should be commended on ) but why did it take them so long to do so ???? political gain maybe ?????

Firstly glad to see you have sobered up.

Reg in the trough no one disputes that however some are greedier than others.

AS never put a new 5k bathroom in his home on the tab of joe public.

Murphy turned up for 52% of the votes obviously the other 48% wasnt worth voting on, good to see his involvement in illegal wars was worthy of a vote though.

You can huff and puff all you want Labour is finished.

From what i gather folk are starting to realise that donating locally serves better than the "big" organisations.

Children in need for example have 90 million pound circulation paying wages from interest than giving directly to those in need. 90 million from last year should never be sitting.

Re blair folk should take a long hard look at there mp's msp's.

Jim murphy for instance voted to invade iraq and voted to save trident now he wants to scrap trident post referendum.

Labour simply can't be trusted and have took the scottish vote for too long.

So a load of people have joined the SNP, big deal. Politicians love statistics, so what %age of these new members were already SNP voters?

I'm not suggesting it's the case, but if they all were already SNP voters, then the party won't have gained a single new vote!!

But of course it makes good headlines, and massages the top brasses' egos.

Seeing as we're looking at numbers - here's something worth remembering.. and it doesn't make such a good headline.

''Douglas Alexander faced calls to resign as Gordon Brown's general election chief after an independent inquiry found that his "self-interested" moves to change electoral rules in Labour's favour led to the debacle that saw nearly 150,000 votes wasted in the Scottish elections this year.'' And he's in charge of Labour's next election campaign.

I have nothing but respect for the democratic rights of my fellow citizens - whether I share their views or not. The difficulty here - is that Douglas Alexander has been found to have no such regard - yet is still in a position of power.

What is it with Labour supporting less able siblings - is it some kind of bizarre equalities agenda?

Disingenous - previous posts suggest that you'd support Jim murphy's crate -or 'Just For Men', portrait, before a purposeful / credible politician

Jim Murphy acted as he did on the night of the Clutha, not because he's a Labour MP but because he's a human being.
