apparently now all the supermarkets will be charging 5p for plastic bags as of yesterday so i guess that means our weekly shop will have to go down as a result or we're gonna have to learn to balance all our items on our head else face paying out 5p per bad...doh! im just gonna take my bodybag shopping and fill it up

Like the alcohol minimum pricing this is classic pointless givernment policy.

If they were generating money for the NHS or environment or charity then fine but the shops are collecting the money themselves and like fuck will any of it get to good causes.

Another win for the supermarkets.

lol charity begins at home so everyone contact me for my home address where you can send me the 5p's to the _akedninja charity....somewhere in the world there is a young naked ninja without the funds to buy a proper ninja suit and they're using plastic bags which will damage their health and rustle ever time they move making it impossible for them to sneak up on anybody

Was in a pharmacy this morning and saw their note about having to charge. Some pharma companies are apparently supplying bags for free to hide your medicines.

the shops I deal with aint happy being made to charge folk and are more afraid of the finacial penalty of non compliance in the long run this is a good thing in my view

It doesn't cost a supermarket 5p to supply a bag, but they have been passing on the costs to us anyway.

If you think twice about paying for it, you will recycle your old bags.

Less bags used = less bags sold.

More bags recycled = less bags in land fill.

I actually think it is a good idea!

Went to mcdonald's last night and got charged for a brown bag now I wouldnt have minded but the mr that ain't ugly I'm desperate to pay 5p!

If people start using their own bags then the supermarkets don't make money. It's a small change. We'll get used to it and look back 5 yrs from now and wonder what all the fuss was about. Like the smoking ban. Same with minimal pricing. Look into it. It's really not a bad thing for joe blogs. Look at Canada. You can't buy booze in a supermarket. It works. Supermarkets have their part to play in health. They do 241s on all the worst products. Never fruit or veg. Always crisps, booze, fizzy pop etc

Its education. Bags are an inconvenience for the short term. Bo x

There is some interesting analysis on food prices - prices for healthy stuff have increased more than inflation and prices for unhealthy stuff much less over last five years - calorie for calorie - yet again those not well off are being screwed and driven away from making healthy choices.

Funny you say that.since bringing in the 5p charge ages ago when i go shopping you see a lot of younger people using the grannies trolley lol....

Free bag with prescriptions

Free bag with raw meat

Mcds charge for a bag tho otherwise your just handed your burger and chips..

And I for one always forget my bags lol

the bags that supermarkets supply are not free, like everything else to run their business/ make profits, its all included in the price you pay for your shopping. Your actually paying for it twice now.

Retailers do not get the 5p. It all goes to the government to give a proportion to charity (all retailers get to suggest their own), and the rest goes to environmental issues such as landfills etc.

M&S have been doing it for years. As have Lidl. If a retailer, however small, doesn't do it, they have to publicly announce it and they will be charged £5,000.

I like a wee cool tote bag or 500 anyhoos...x

Ah! Well I work for a big retailer and so we couldn't get away with those sort of shenanigans! Maybe smaller businesses would. I say stock up of tote bags and suck it up. That will stop all the discussion of where it goes, as they won't have anyone buying them!

I presume that the retailers will pay the 5p at source if the revenue goes to the government as its the only way to collect it accurately. I can't see any small business or clothes shop willingly charging 5p a bag??

The retailers buy their bags same as before they gave them away free they now have to charge 5p minimum none of this 5p is handed over to the govt the only time they give money to the govt is if they get caught supplying bags for free they are then fined some retailers have entered into a pact that any profits recieved through bag sales will go directly to charity but its the retailers choice what they do with their profit

I would say smaller retailers will make money on this then as opposed to larger retailers who have csr policies that they will follow in respect of the charge?
