Broken Cooker/ Boiler. Any good Advice?

1. The boiler has stopped turning on, I have tried using the ignition key etc to no avail. Is there anything I could try before calling out the repair man? The boiler is about 25 yrs old but we cant replace it due to the cost, neither me or my mum apply for any of the scrappage schemes.

2. Is there anyway to check to see what has broken on a cooker, only the oven part has died, hobs fine. It's just to see if I can check the cooker element and at least that way I'd know what needs fixed.

Any advice, tips, hints or tricks would be fantastic or where would be best to get a number for a professional who knows what to do would be utterly fantastic.

The ovens electric. the hob is gas.

the boilers gas as well

New someone to look at it properly

To be honest 25 years for a boiler is pretty good going

Speak to a local plumbing company ask him if he might consider doing a deal of monthly instalments.

It sounds like the fan element has went it was £40 for the part & had to pay £30 to get it fixed

Im an electrician, sounds like your oven element has blown. very easy to replace ive changed a few for £50 all in so if anyone tries to charge alot more than that look else where lol

First thing to check ..........fusebox..... are all circuits open if not this then its an engineer required especially if dealing with gas last folk id listen to is horny folk on here

The elements away in the cooker and the boiler might just be needing a wee top up of pressure.look underneath and turn on the wee taps or buttons but watch the pressure dial just short bursts till it goes to 1.5 but definitely no more than 2.00

Thanks for the info everyone. To clarify, the boiler make is a Glowworm Hotwater Express 80..... so its ancient, but anything knowledge you all would be great x

If either of you get any form of benefits then you can apply for a replacement boiler and it shouldn't cost you anything provided you meet the criteria but it may take up to 3 months to get it

Average boiler lasts 10-15 years so dine well out that one, wouldn't spend lot money get it fixed do to that pm me tell me what it is doing or isn't ie still got hot water or heat st and all lights on?

Got couple of Gloworms,really well built boilers, and very reliable.

Its very likely its the thermocouple thats gone,and thats about a cheap a part as there is.You do need a Gas safe registered engineer to look at it

Boiler - When you press the ignition button do you see a spark/pilot light (there's usually a little glass porthole to peer through). No spark/pilot and it's probably the ignition circuit, if you see a spake/pilot light it's probably the thermocouple. Neither part is usually too costly but the engineer to fit them's a different story....

Oven - Almost certainly the element. Google the model number of the oven and you'll find plenty spares available online. Unlike the boiler, changing an element in an electric over is a job a reasonably competent handyman can do.
