"Are oranges named orange because they’re orange or is orange called orange because oranges are orange? doe's anyone have any explanation for what could possibly be the 8th mystery of the world? ;) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" Ok are you sitting down? The word Orange originates from old french (anglo saxon or norman I think) word, ORENGE. Used to describe the fruit first and then the colour. Interesting things about the word: It is generally beleived that it there is no Rhyming word for Orange. I argued this with my college proffessor friend and he eventually throuogh a puffy red face of heated debate asked me to provide him with a Rhyming word. I said Orange Rhymms with henge as in STONE... Say it with me proffessor: OOOOORANGE... STOOOOONEHENGE! He stood corrected!

Orange rhymes with Blorenge (a mountain in Wales) and sporange (a sac where spores are made). "Silver" has the same rumor going for it, but it actually rhymes with Wilver (a nickname) and chilver (a ewe lamb).
