So if the colour is named after the fruit, what was the colour called before they discovered the fruit?

nobody knows, orange first referred to as a colour around 1500, best guesses think it was yellow-red.

orange is derived from the french orenge, that came from arabic/persian/sanskrit words n'ranj/n'rang/n'ranga.

who needs stephen fry when the boy bino is here

Ok are you sitting down?

The word Orange originates from old french (anglo saxon or norman I think) word, ORENGE. Used to describe the fruit first and then the colour.

Interesting things about the word:

It is generally beleived that it there is no Rhyming word for Orange. I argued this with my college proffessor friend and he eventually throuogh a puffy red face of heated debate asked me to provide him with a Rhyming word.

I said Orange Rhymms with henge as in STONE... Say it with me proffessor:

OOOOORANGE... STOOOOONEHENGE!

He stood corrected!

lol you got me thinking so naturally i had to google the following : The rumor that "orange" rhymes with no other word is incorrect. Orange rhymes with Blorenge (a mountain in Wales) and sporange (a sac where spores are made). "Silver" has the same rumor going for it, but it actually rhymes with Wilver (a nickname) and chilver (a ewe lamb).
