Electrical advice needed please

WTF. Bulbs in 3 lamps have blown at the same time and all sheared off leaving the bayonet part in the lamps, how do I get them out? HELP (I'm not safe with candles lol)

MAKE SURE LAMPS ARE SWITCHED OFF LOL. Unplug to be sure, then use a pair of pliers, try and grip the metal screw in part at the top and unscrew it out, shouldn't be too difficult unless you screwed them in really tight.

Might have been a power surge which took all 3 out at once. Are they in different lamps or 3 bulbs in the one lamp?

all lamps switched off and unplugged. Need to wait for the daylight tomorrow to try and find pliers lol.

3 Separate lamps and all put on at separate times in different rooms!!

Step 1

Unplug the lamps.

Get a potato and cut it in half.

Push it firmly onto the metal base of the bulb as far as you can, then simply twist as if you were removing it normally.

Simple

Step 2

Call in an electrician to check the main fuse box as it's extremely unusual for 3 to go at the same time and it may have been a simple power surge but best to get an expert to check

If and when you get the old bulbs out and put new ones in...check that anything else plugged into sockets in those rooms still work...if they don't you will probably need to go to your Fusebox and put the trip switch for that circuit back up or they may have a Reset button ?

If its old fuses you have ...check the fuses ( 15 Amp ) and see if any are blown ?...if so you will need the correct value fuse wire to make the fuse good again..15 Amp fuse wire if the lamps are plugged into sockets.)

If the fuse or trip switch goes again when you switch the lamps on again...you probably have a bad connection or loose wire somewhere ?

Very strange that 3 separate bulbs would blow in succession..really. As was said previously..could have been a power surge ?

House is only 7yrs old so presume it'snot "fuserwire"

I don't shop at Ikea, not even for meatballs or the ball pit!!

You should be able to mail me as I don't have any filters on.

Is it a lamp plugged into the wall via a socket? If so the MCB (Minature Circuit Breaker) or trip switch or fuse in old money will be 32A. Check that that too hasn't tripped, it should have if it's a B-curve MCB on a ring.

For lighting from the ceiling, the rating will be 6A.

I installed C-Curve breakers for my lighting ring, C-curve breakers don't trip instantly unlike the quicker B-Curve ones. This means your lights don't all go out.

Are you in a block of flats or a semi? see if anyone else has has the same problem, if so it's more than likely a surge. If it happens again, get on the phone to Scottish Power Energy Networks (or whatever energy region you are in) and tell them you want an SPD installed at the head. Energy Networks cover the physical cabling, Scottish Power may not necessarily be your supplier, but the electricity will come down their power grid.

As already mentioned could be a spike from the supplier. When you have removed the bayonets from the lamps n replaced the bulbs before switching back on, unplug all three. Check the wire from the plug to the light unit for no fraying exposed internal core wires. Check the on off switch for no damage etc. If there is any damage exposed wiring do not use. Could be loose terminal connections arcing but would expect if that was the case to throw the breaker. Sometimes stuff just wears out. When plugging back in switch on one by one if one is at fault it will blow the bulb or throw the breaker, if so unplug n don't use. usually it is a process of elimination just always unplug from mains. If there is a fault on the suppliers side they will fix for free if it is on the consumer side then you will need to pay. Good luck
