Changing Banks ?

Traditionally like many people the bank they choose from an early age often remains unchanged throughout their entire life.

This maybe because the "change" looked like too much self grief etc...

Anyway as part of a much needed finance restructuring i noticed that im paying out nearly £30 a month for charges for arranged overdrafts and so called "bolt on's" with my current account be it breakdown cover, phone insurance, card cover etc.

With the introduction of the "easy switch" service now available.

Has anyone else changed banks smoothly in regards to direct debits, standing orders etc and been better off with charges ?

Has the enticements aka bolt ons been better or worse ?

Does it effect your credit rating as how long you have been with a bank is often a question asked when it comes to finances.

Any pitfalls one should be aware off ?

Most banks have a range of current accounts with different 'attractions' like the overdraft facility and bolt ins you mention.

Can you change to a different account with the same bank, losing the stuff you don't want yet keeping the continuity you do want?

You need to shop around pp, current accounts with any bank will cost you but some don't apply the charges if £.....is credited to the ca monthly. Dd's you need to inform the company your paying, standing orders you can amend online if you online bank xx

Move your wages and regular payments to whichever bank you like but keep your oldest bank account open. That way, when a credit application form asks you how long you've had your bank account, you can still just give them the details of the oldest account.

Ta, had a browse on uswitch and the TSB is way down the pecking order for value.

I thought the switch team did all the informing to the necessary parties ?

Ohh I meant to mention, cancel the insurance for blah blah, better option is to have several policies with the one company and don't be shy in asking for a reduction for multiple insurance xx

They will if it's direct debits because it's the company you are paying approaching your account but with standing orders, you control that, just like bill payments etc xx give me a buzz if none of this makes sense xx

TSB, as distinct from Lloyds TSB are a bit new to get a worthwhile comparison.

They ARE, however, very keen to get new customers of their own - not just the ones they inherited from Lloyds.

Go talk to them.

I work in a branch so I see it on a daily basis. 9 times out of 10 the bank will move your direct debits and the money that is regularly credited to your account with no issues as all and now with the new switching service they have all signed up for it shouldn't take longer than a week.

There are however the odd complications where the bank doesn't get whoever it is that pays you to pay into the new account early enough for the next payment. Just make sure the new bank puts on a big enough temporary overdraft so that your bills are covered if the credit isn't transferred over but the direct debits are.

I've been with same bank since forever so cant really offer any advice but

Bank of Scotland rewards account pay u£5 a month if you put a grand in a month

I used to juggle the same 1k around between both my reward accounts each month and make an easy tenner

Now they only offer the £5 reward on

main reward account

Also u might be able to compare Banks on MoneSupermarket
