Chiropractor

I had a prolapsed disc which was pushing on my sciatic nerve last year. Was in agony for 6 months and off work for 9. It gradually eased off and I was pain free for 8 months.

BUT now it is back with a vengeance! I can't walk more than 50metres without being in serious pain. I'm living in a tramadol haze during the day and dosing up on amitriptyline at night.

Dr has referred me back to physio and waiting on an appointment to see a surgeon

A few people have advised going to see a chiropractor. The dr poo poohed the idea but I am getting desperate.

Just wondered if any of you guys had ever been to a chiropractor and what your experience was?

Also anyone local have any recommendations?

Thanks

L xxx

Went to one several years ago when I didn't have back problems but had slight posture problems and never felt better after treatments, they are magicians when it comes to knowing where to push n prod

Had a crash a few months back so know what you mean about the meds haze lol not easy but waiting on appointments freeing up at the chiropractor I used before in the past as he was amazing so fingers crossed

But at £40 a session and at least weekly for 12 weeks isn't easy on the pocket at times

An osteopath may be a better option as this involves more gentle manipulation as opposed to the more severe chiropractor.

There is a big lad in Cumbernauld who has a practice in the centre. Also a back clinic in Falkirk

Good luck

Ouch, hope you get well soon otherwise I'd advise looking into some form of hollistic or herbal form of pain relief x

Sounds similar to what my sister had and she had to have surgery. Got a consultation quickly due to going private and luckily got the operation quite quickly as she was more severe than others. Her Dr and surgeon were against any sort of physio until they were clear of what the problem was.

I would honestly recommend not going to physio/chiro until you've seen a surgeon as they will order a scan and you'll know whats really going on. Physio may damage you even more.

Good luck xx

Funnily enough lying flat on my back with my legs raised or being on all 4's is the only time I'm not in pain

Glasgow (for now)

Not sure if I would see a physio with a prolapsed disk until after a medical scan.

Saw sports physio after a bad muscle injury in my back. Best £200 spent. Also after I ripped a muscle in my leg.

Best of luck!

I was just in the royal on Friday with my back and leg killing me, was told sciatica. Was just given cocodamol and ibuprofen and told to rest. I've been hoping to be back at work by the end of the week but starting to think that won't happen as the amount of pain that I'm in and not being able to hold any weight on my left leg when walking. I just hope it passes soon, it's excruciating!

If you have a prolapsed disc no chiropractic or osteopath would manipulate you. A full prolapse would put you in a wheelchair or worse. However, disc trouble doesn't cause sciatica as such so maybe you need imaging to see where the problem is.

Hmmm know your pain.

I have 2 prolapsed discs on my lower back.with pain traveling down both legs.

Been to see the surgeon and I declined the surgery he offered. Was not too keen on idea of having bits cut off my disks at 38 so suffer pain.

Surgeon explained that most people will suffer back probs in lifetime from 35 to 60 so as i have a long time thought better of the surgery.

I was also seeing the physio at hospital as was refered to both by gp. Was physio that got me an mri before i had even seen orthodpedic surgeon. She knew as much about spine as surgeon to be honest. She gave me various excercises to do to reduce prolapse and build up core strength to stablise back. Works well as i dont take pain killers. Did tramadol once nd gave them back to chemist horrific out of body expierience so use ibobrufen if am crippled. So i keep doing excercises to keep on top and if i feel it start to play up i do them several times a day.

Unless ur private uve got more chance of seeing physio earlier than surgeon so refer urself to physio.

hope this helps and wish you well.

S

Isn't easy on the pocket but better than waiting on the NHS and suffer in pain for months and months.

Have had my fair share of problems over the years and eventually learnt pay and not suffer.

Have to agree with the Osteopath verses Chiropractor through my own experiences also some acupuncture maybe.

Depends what's actually caused the problem.. A sports therapist is often a better start than osteo or chiro as they'll work on the muscles that aren't working properly around it (and possibly causing it) rather than just charging you 30 quid to realign it once a fortnight.

Can't help with advice about the chiropractor but will say that tramadol are highly addictive and can be a nightmare to come off. The longer you're on them the higher the dose you need for the same amount of pain relief. The higher the dose the worse the withdrawal. Speaking from experience here.

That's not what i wanted to hear, just out the docs with a load of tramadol 50mg and ibuprofen 600mg, two of each to be taken together!

A lot of doctors don't agree or even know about chiropractors or oesteopaths.....years ago I had similar, couldn't stand straight etc etc, and the doc told me to lie in bed for a week.(which may sound like fun lol)Someone suggested an oesteopath and the relief was almost instant...I could walk straight again and worth every penny.

Over the years when I feel it's going to go again I go back to the oesteopath.

Would recommend going to either for an initial consultation and if they are good they will tell you if they can help or not

I fell from a ladder 3 months ago and Dr told me to take painkillers. I contacted an oesteopath in Edinburgh where I got an appointment and within 10 minutes of him seeing me the problem was solved. 2 discs misplaced and the best £40 ever spent. Name and address available if required but its in Edinburgh

I have had a few problems over the years and agree 100%. I feel it is slowly changing with the new young doctors coming through, accepting and recommending alternative therapy.

I believe back home in Oz they all now work together for the good of the patient unlike here with all the squabbling with each other.

Well I went to an osteopath yesterday and she gave me acupuncture and tried some manipulation of the joints.

It felt great on the table and when I first stood up the pain was significantly less than usual.

Unfortunately by the time I'd left the building and crossed the road it was just as bad

I'm going back on Thursday when she is going to try me out on the traction table. I am hoping this will help as it was what the physio wanted to do last time but the hospital didn't have a traction table that was working.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and messages

Big hugs xxxx

We hear you Mr Remy has been suffering for 6 weeks. Been seeing a chiropractor for about 6 weeks with some relief but it's not lasting.
