I was in Arbroath earlier today to gauge public opinion in the wake of Fugy, son of Fugy's return.

He was seen lurking by the Red Lion Caravan park after dark dressed in his familiar red velvet pantaloons, yellow gingham shirt, green waistcoat and pointy red hat. His yellow and red convertible was reported as having been seen at a near by gay bar.

There are those in Arbroath that fear his return from exile could unleash a horrific backlash from the gnome community.

I asked a middle-aged woman buying a new pair of specs at specsavers what her worst fears were.

"Fish, mainly," she said with nervous smile.

"Fish?" I repeated.

"Well...Victoria and Albert are all I've got since the heron took the carp and the tench." The woman dabbed at her eyes with a scented polkadot handkerchief and stifled a sob.

"I'm not with you, madam..."

"He'll be hungry, won't he? Fugy I mean. Starving most likely, and our ponds have been safe while he's been away.....would you like a mint humbug?".......
