I have heard that being dont before Heather so you are not the only one. That is the difficult thing with a social gathering being in an open pub but after being at a few organised socials in venues hired specifically for that purpose there is so much organising involved and a lot of nitpicking going on about various things the people who used to do it got fed up with it and stopped doing it hence why they stopped happening. I wouldn't organize anything like that for those reasons. At least in a pub if nobody turns up it's not a loss as it's always a night out!

PMSL. I know what a few people look like so I've got an advantage, I'm not exactly hard to spot either, 6ft both ways..

that's why I'm turning up a little later when there's hopefully a wee group formed that's easy to spot.
