That the tradition of chrir has completely been overrun and too commercialized now? Thinking back to when I was a child I was so excited to get a stocking with just a few sweets, oranges ,colouring book and some pencils.

But talking to some of my friends there putting psp games and other quite expensive items into their child's stockings.

Is it me or am I'm being a bit old fashioned in not giving overly expensive gifts to our son?

Surely it's to spend time with loved ones and not be overdrawn on your bank account or going crazy on a credit card?

What are your thoughts?

I think it all stems from peer pressure

And every kid wanting the same as every other kid.

I remember one Christmas trapsing the streets for weeks searching for the very much sought after hulk hogan wrestling figure

I finally got it ,but a last min pressie I thought my son would like I purchased a £1.99 table top snooker game and as you can guess out of everything he got that year that was the present he played with for hours lol

We don't normally buy into the whole thing and our kids get a few bits and pieces but not overly expensive.

However, this year we can actually afford to do it after having a few "dry" years. We are going all to town for both of them this year, really spoiling them and don't care what anyone thinks tbh

As far as stockings go, it's all about the silly little things from the pound shop etc. it's just to make them giggle and have a laugh. Plus you HAVE to have chocolate coins in there too

As far as Xmas presents go, it's normally something they want like bikes this year, plus a couple of silly bits and some clothes too. They do ok throughout the year so they don't need masses at Xmas. But it is nice to treat them if I've got the money to do so.

Nothing has changed just the gifts,back in my days we would get something special like a great bike these days its an xbox or psp etc

I remember going to my grannies and it would be one of my grandads woollie socks (washed I hope!!) with an orange and a small thing in, we thought it was great!

Ive asked our kids too what theyd like, sometimes they jyst say a surprise, which is nice to hear instead of all the expensive stuff!!.....Theyll get a surprise alright if they get up to a bag of coal!!

Everything you have said is correct,unfortunately we have fell into the same trap and what we are doing is giving the kids things that we never had because our parents couldn't afford.

My kids are all adults now, so it's not the same anymore

They did ok at xmas and usually got one big item from santa and other bits and pieces....actually, they do ok as adults too!!

Mine aren't too spoiled tbh, and probably allowing for inflation get about what I got when I was their age. They do get money now from aunts and uncles which bumps up what they actually get, e.g. I'll buy them something they want that's a bit more expensive, then they give me the difference from their xmas money.

Though I do know plenty of folks who go into stupid debt to buy their kids everything.

have you noticed that its adults who have the perception that giving your kids the things you didnt have will make them happy. I think back now and realise the best gift was simply the time spent with family and friends and the shared memories we created.

My siblings and parents know me very well so if they see something I like they'll buy it, I rarely ask for things these days unless it's something like expensive perfumes which my dad can get from abroad for me.

I'm a spoilt brat though so I usually get plenty, far too much actually and kick off if I don't have the most out of everyone...

For me its just all about the little ones.....now that there are only adults in the family we tend to concentrate on one major gift with a lot of thought put into it.

The greatest fun is with my group of girlfriends...we still do a maximum £10 secret santa and it proves its the not the value....its the thought and care that counts.
