Christmas - Serious Post

I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas at the best of times but this year I'm dreading it as it will be without my mother. I will be probably on my own.

I'm considering going into a soup kitchen for an hour or so to help, but I don't know if I will be any good.

My head is spinning. Not looking for sympathy. Just looking to share and to prewarn any outbursts of grumpiness have a reason.

I think a lot of people find it a stressful time as family is at the forefront of our minds with loved ones that are no longer there.. I think your offer to help others in need is admiral and hopefully help you feel better too. Good luck x

I feel exactly the same way. I find the whole thing so difficult and have for years. Its such an emotional family time and if your family is not complete its the loneliest time.

Id love to do something worthwhile too....just to escape it. I greatly expect it will be laughing on the outside...crying on the inside......again.

You want to go there spreading a bit of cheer to those who use such places....

I think you should, you be surprised how good you would feel just for doing it!

This will be my first Christmas without my gran for 25 years and quite frankly dreading it.

I've always loved Christmas but to me, what made Christmas was family and my gran kept us all in check.

Since she's past we've all went our separate ways and it just won't be the same.

It's not "how good you are" that matters, just that you do it.

A lot of people forget that many struggle at this time of year for a whole variety of reasons.

Spending your time on someone is much more rewarding than spending money, and often more welcome.

No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

Your a stronger lady than you give yourself credit for Missy .

But what a wonderfull thing to do for others who may be less fortunate than yourself so good on you for even thinking about it .

Christmas is always a tough and emotional time for those who have lost loved ones but always remember how they where and the joyous happy times you had with them at this time of year, maybe even do a wee tribute to them in their honour and celebrate the Christmases you spent together rather than focusing on the ones when your not together ...I believe they are all around us looking down so toast thiefs lifes hunni xxxx

Christmas is always a hard time for a lot of people and even as time goes by it never gets easier. Keep busy and if you want to help out somewhere why not. A lot of people are in bad times more than ever now and you will prob find a lot in same boat doing the exact sane thing so being able to help out is greatly rewarding. Good luck. Mrs K x

Christmas is a sad time for many amongst the celebrations , salvation army are always thankfull for volunteers especially this time of year, local hospices also , or what about an old neighbour that has no one to share , a simple cuppa and a chat can make someones day and maybe help ease yours a little .

Thank you all for your kind words both here and privately. And for sharing. The world is still a scary place, cruel, unkind. Every day I'm getting a little stronger, but this time of year puts me back on the slippery slope. Thank you all for listening.

Christmas can be a really horrible time. I was in a similar situation as the OP last year and took myself and the children away abroad to a country where Christmas is celebrated as it was meant to be.

This year, we're off to the middle of nowhere, to do our own thing, cheaply. Anyone else want to join us? lol

I think the soup kitchen idea is a wonderful one. I wish I'd thought of that.

I normally offer to work a shift on xmas day and give someone who's scheduled to work the time to spend with family.

I see my daughter before or after shift and find that gives me focus at this time of year, also remember all those happy festive times spent with loved ones not here anymore as a positive and it works for me.

Your not alone OP

Some colleges and universities welcome offers from people willing to host a xmas dinner for students from overseas. Often they cant get home for xmas - they get a good traditional meal and some social interaction, you get a full table of strangers about to become new friends. Win - win all round.

Sent a wee message aye it is a very tough time miss my Mum and Dad they were both big hearted and funny. I always looked up to them, they were tall. Simply the best. Be as grumpy as you like. Arrange to visit a childrens ward with a charity on Christmas Day.

David x
