You know where im coming from when i say "mum's cooking was the best ever".

What did she cook that you just cant match however hard you try?

Mine is her rice pudding recipe. Made with Evap and ordinary milk. Sultana's and other mixed fruits.... all baked in the oven for ages.

Jeez, thats got me in the mood for another go at it.

My mum used to make awesome roast dinners with crunchy roast potatoes and thick dark gravy.

Now she's a bit older she's not so good at it unfortunately

Edinburgh

My mum was a baker so her cakes were amazing, but what I really remember was how good her soups were. Just good hearty home cooking.

Any soup is always better 2day

I guess it all to do with the flavours marinating together and intensifying the taste.

"My mums clootie dumpling.

My Mum's handwritten recipe runs

6 oz Sugar

8 oz Sultanas

8 oz Currants

1 lb Plain Flour

3 dessertspoons Treacle

1 teaspoon Baking Soda

2 teaspoons Cinnamon

1 teaspoon Ginger

1 teaspoon Spice

8 oz pkt Atora

Milk to mix.

Cook for 4 hours

..........................

the 'cook for 4 hours' meant sitting wrapped in muslin (tied at the top) on an upturned plate in a big pot with just enough water boiling away at the bottom to continue to create steam, topped up as required.

As with so many recipes, there's no hard and fast, right or wrong way. I reckon the spice mix is probably unique to each cook.

Good luck if you try it. I hope it's close to what you remember.
